Heavy periods, hot flashes, mood swings, sleeplessness, a reduction in libido, and pain during sex are just some of the symptoms that women may experience during the menopause transition. It’s a transition that all women will face. Unfortunately many women go through this life phase with little support other than close friends/family (many who may have been told to grit and bear it) and late night deep internet dives.

Dr. Erin Rurak, ND, a certified North American Menopause Clinician, who has expertise in the menopause transition as well as with breast cancer prevention and survivorship, will help shed light on this transition providing insight on how to manage the symptoms that women may experience. Wear some comfy clothes and have a cup of tea ready as we will end the discussion with an open question and answer period.

IV Suite

Have you caught a cold this holiday season? Need to beat it fast? Receiving IV therapy full of vitamins and nutrients can help support your immune system to get you back to normal! There are advantages of having nutrients through IV rather than taking orally, as they will bypass absorption in the digestive track. At IHC, we have many formulations specifically tailored to helping you beat a cold. Some of these nutrients include:

Vitamin C: stimulates and enhances immune cell function

Zinc: improves immune system defense

B Vitamins: increase energy

Additional nutrients such magnesium, calcium, and selenium, and injections of Vitamin A, may also be included, depending on the formulation. Some of these formulations show great benefit in increasing energy, reducing cold and flu symptoms and decreasing long haul symptoms of viral infections.

Schedule an appointment with an IHC doctor today to figure out what IV is best for your health. Each IV is administered over approximately 1 hour and available in both our White Rock and Fort Langley locations.

From the Cancer Care Centre

Who Benefits from Palliative Care?

A palliative care consultation is recommended soon after a serious illness is diagnosed so that a whole-person approach (physical-emotional-spiritual) can be applied to the treatment of the cancer or disease process. Palliative care is about how to LIVE with a serious illness … it’s not just about planning for the end. Palliative care doctors are also consulted to help treat the more difficult symptoms that can sometimes be associated with advanced cancer and cancer-related therapies.

Dr. Sclater will be working on Tuesdays at the White Rock location starting in January 2024. When patients are referred by their family doctor (or nurse practitioner), the consultation fee is covered by MSP (Medical Services Plan of BC). Dr. Sclater has developed an increasing interest in naturopathic treatments over the past few years and has increasingly adopted more of these therapies into his family practice. He now looks forward to joining the IHC team, collaborating with the naturopathic doctors, learning more about integrative oncology, and providing an extra layer of support for patients and families who are facing the challenges of a serious cancer diagnosis.

Transition to the New Year

With the holiday season behind us and the new year in full swing, a range of emotions tends to intensify among us all. This transitional phase, marked by festivity, and a sense of new beginnings, may also stir feelings of stress, anxiety, and fluctuating moods.

While we move through this celebratory period and onto 2024, the role of a Naturopathic Doctor becomes clear in guiding individuals towards optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

New Year's Resolution: Tame the Inflammation

Has the holiday season flared up your symptoms? Poor sleep, poor diet and high stress are a potent holiday combo that hit most of us in December and can lead to inflammation and a worsening of symptoms. I’m sure the article on psoriasis below isn’t the only news clip that’s drawn your attention to inflammation.

Want to tackle it in 2024? January is a great time to jump on the wellness bandwagon: healthy eating, sleeping and exercise. What do these things have in common? They all lower inflammation.

Healthy food: if you want to go beyond standard anti-inflammatory diets, I suggest taking a shortcut and doing a personalized food sensitivity test. Once your nutrition is on track, it’s time to delve into the realm of sleep. Some improvements will already be felt from the food changes. If there are still issues - ask your ND about supplements that don’t interfere with medications you already take. The final step may be to layer in hands-on treatment to lower your stress. Have you ever considered extending your visit to 45 minutes to include acupuncture or cupping from your ND while you check in on your protocol? Many of us, including myself do both of these treatments. Perhaps give Bowen therapy a try. It’s my favourite approach for stimulating the para- sympathetic system for the person who just can’t shut off the fight-or-flight response.

Doctor Favourite Receipes

Sugar-free Banana Almond Cookies

These soft almond cookies are quick to make, filling, and are an excellent source of protein and polyunsaturated fats. I originally started making these as a sugar-free snack for my toddler, then realized they are great for adults too! Making a double batch allows for extra cookies to freeze and thaw as needed.

  • 2 medium sized, ripe bananas (riper bananas will make a sweeter cookie)
  • 1 1/3 cups almond flour
  • 1/3 cup finely shredded coconut
  • 2 tbsp hemp hearts (optional, for additional healthy fats)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking powder

DIRECTIONS

1) Preheat the oven to 350F

2) In a mixing bowl, mash the bananas with a fork until smooth.

3) Add the almond flour, coconut, hemp hearts, baking powder, and cinnamon. Stir to incorporate.

4) Spoon out the dough onto a tray lined with parchment paper

5) Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the edges are golden brown

Makes 10-12 cookies.
