Creating clean energy from waste

Sewer heat recovery plant coming to North Vancouver

Did you know that every time you take a shower, wash your laundry, or clean your dishes, valuable heat is lost as it goes down the drain?

Lonsdale Energy is building a new energy plant in North Vancouver to capture that heat to use in our community energy system. Using this recovered energy to heat homes will help to remove about 7,600 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year – that's like removing 2,700 gas-powered cars off the road every year!

The federal and provincial governments have given their seal of approval, and are contributing
$17.5 million to help build this plant. We estimate that customers will have their homes heated in part by recovered sewage heat in 2027.

New rate changes in effect

Last month, City Council adopted the rate adjustments for the Meter, Capacity and Commodity rates. The rates were adjusted for inflation and to help introduce a new low-carbon energy source in late-2025.

The updated rates came into effect November 1, 2024. Customers will see the updated rates reflected in their December invoices.

To read the minutes of the Council meeting (adopted October 21), visit the City of North Vancouver’s website. To view the updated rates, please visit our webpage.

Stay warm and save energy

With winter just around the corner, Lonsdale Energy offers these tips to help you stay comfortable at home while also saving energy:

  • Consider lowering the temperature: Taking it down a degree or two can save energy and still keep your home comfortable. A good rule of thumb is to program your thermostat to 17°C when you're not at home, and 20°C when you are awake and at home.
  • Cover your windows: Using window coverings can help reduce energy loss in the coming months. Remember to open your curtains or blinds in the morning to let in natural heat and sunlight. Then, close them in the evening to keep heat from escaping through the windows.
  • Load it up: Whether it's laundering a pile of clothes or cleaning a stack of dishes, aim to run your washing machine or dishwasher only when it's full to avoid wasting hot water.
