The Ancient Law (1923): Film screening and live musical accompaniment

On Friday, April 1 at 3 pm PDT, join us at the Royal Bank Cinema for an exciting event that we are co-sponsoring – The Ancient Law (1923): Film Screening and Live Musical Accompaniment!

Don’t miss out on the upcoming screening of the 1923, fully restored silent film Das alte Gesetz (The Ancient Law), directed by E.A. Dupont, with German/English intertitles, with musicians Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin performing the live score.

Beautifully restored in 2017, with a superb cast (Henny Porten, Ernst Deutsch and others), it’s the story of a rabbi’s son who leaves the shtetl to become an actor at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The rabbi is not pleased. Porten plays an archduchess who develops an interest in the boy. Her courtiers are not pleased. Trouble ensues on both fronts.

The Imitation Game: Visual Culture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
March 5 - October 23, 2022

The Imitation Game, an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, surveys the extraordinary uses (and abuses) of artificial intelligence (AI) in the production of modern and contemporary visual culture around the world.

The exhibition follows a chronological narrative that first examines the development of artificial intelligence, from the 1950s to the present, through a precise historical lens. Building on this foundation, it emphasizes the explosive growth of AI across disciplines, including animation, architecture, art, fashion, graphic design, urban design and video games, over the past decade. Revolving around the important roles of machine learning and computer vision in AI research and experimentation, The Imitation Game reveals the complex nature of this new tool and demonstrates its importance for cultural production.

April 7, 2022

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Imitation Game: Visual Culture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, the Speculative Futures Symposium examines artificial intelligence and the specific uses of technology in its multifarious dimensions.

How well do we understand data analysis and artificial intelligence? In this talk, Dr. Ramon Amaro will discuss machine learning, mathematics and the embedded implications of racial hierarchy. In conversation with Melissa Karmen Lee, Director of Education and Public Programs at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Dr. Amaro will consider the complex relationship between machine learning and race, as well as the inspirational possibilities of providing alternative approaches to contemporary algorithmic practice.

Speculative Futures | Taking on Big Tech: New Paradigms for New Possibilities
April 7, 2022

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Imitation Game: Visual Culture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, the Speculative Futures Symposium examines artificial intelligence and the specific uses of technology in its multifarious dimensions.

The landscape of information is rapidly shifting as new demands are increasing investment in digital technologies. Yet, critical scholars continue to demonstrate how many technologies are shaped by and infused with values that are not impartial, disembodied or lacking positionality. Technologies hold racial, gender and class politics.

In this talk, Dr. Safiya Noble from the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry will discuss new insights stemming from her recent book Algorithms of Oppression and posit emerging work that explores the impact of commercial technologies on the public.
