BGSC NEWSLETTER | WINTER 2026 EDITION | Welcome to the Winter 2026 Newsletter! Happy New Year! To our returning students, faculty, alumni and community, welcome to a new academic term and a new year. Join the next cohort of our Graduate Certificate in Global Surgical Care (GCGSC) and Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC). Our online programs are for interdisciplinary surgical care professionals focused on addressing challenges and contributing to solutions in low-resource settings. We welcome surgical care clinicians, trainees in surgical care, and allied health professionals of all disciplines. Applications are now open! Deadline is April 1st, 2026 for international and domestic. Note that there will be only one intake for 2025/26 academic year in September 2026. This series showcases our diverse and new student body. Alumni, current and prospective students can learn more about our community, the different experiences our students have and their various paths toward their goals. Over the past few months, we have featured several new MGSC students and their experiences including Ala Magzoub, Ibrahim Sadiq, Haley Shade, and Emily Stevenson, who share their passion and experiences in global surgery and as new students in the program. VIEW SPOTLIGHTS | | Vital Surgery Training Program Completion | Congratulations to Dr. Garang Garang Nuoi Aguer and Dr. Joseph Kuei Akech Aguer on completing the 18-month Vital Surgery Training Program! Through this collaboration between Médecins Sans Frontières and UBC Global Surgery Lab, they gained essential surgical skills and confidence to provide life-saving care in communities where surgical services are limited. Their stories highlight the power of training local clinicians, the impact of investing in surgical education, and the hope that grows when people continue pushing forward no matter the challenge. READ MORE | | BGSC & GSL Presentations at Chung Day 2025 The Chung Research Day is a highlight of the year for the UBC Department of Surgery. It is a celebration of innovation, inquiry, and collaboration in surgical science. This annual academic event showcases groundbreaking research across basic, clinical, and educational domains. This year, members of the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC) and the Global Surgery Lab (GSL) made a strong showing, presenting a range of insightful and impactful projects addressing global and local surgical challenges. READ MORE | | Transforming Health for Everyone: Strengthening Medical Curriculum in an era of Truth, Reconciliation and Inclusion | On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the UBC Faculty of Medicine Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office (REDI) held an It Starts With Us panel discussion exploring how curriculum in the Faculty of Medicine can better reflect Indigenization, decolonization, and inclusion. The session featured leaders and educators who are reimagining how we teach and learn to prepare future health professionals to serve BC’s diverse communities, including BGSC faculty member Dr. Nadine Caron. | Research Voices from the Field: Dr. Faizal Haji | Research Voices from the Field is a new feature from the UBC Faculty of Medicine Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (REDI) Office, that showcases cutting-edge research that breaks barriers and promotes inclusion in medicine. In this edition, Graduate Program Advisor of our MGSC and GCGSC programs, Dr. Faizal Haji, a pediatric neurosurgeon at the BC Children’s Hospital, Scholar at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES), and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, reflects on why he co-authored “Defining a Framework and Evaluation Metrics for Sustainable Global Surgical Partnerships” with colleagues in the Branch for Global Surgical Care — a piece relevant to anyone interested in decolonization and global health equity. The Bethune Round Table (BRT) is an annual interdisciplinary meeting aimed at addressing the challenges of providing accessible, high-quality surgical care to marginalized patients in low-resource settings.
