November Safety & Enforcement Focus
As winter settles in, we’re focusing on two priorities: safe winter driving and responsible vehicle ownership. Alberta’s Traffic Safety Plan emphasizes safer drivers, vehicles, and roads through education, innovation, and enforcement—small choices that add up to fewer collisions and safer communities.
Winter driving basics Give yourself time and space. Slow down for snow and ice, increase following distance, and make smooth starts and stops. Clear all windows, lights, and plates before you go. Turn on your headlights at dawn, dusk, and during snow so others can see you.
Be road-ready Winter tires with good tread make a difference. Keep washer fluid topped up, carry an emergency kit (blanket, cables, shovel/traction aid, charger, snacks, water), and check that wipers and brakes are in good shape. If conditions are poor, delay your trip or choose another way to travel.
Unregistered and uninsured vehicles Driving without valid registration and insurance is illegal and risky. Check your expiry dates and renew before they lapse. Keep proof of insurance in the vehicle (digital or paper). If you’re involved in a collision without insurance, penalties and costs can be significant—don’t take the chance.
Abandoned vehicles A vehicle left on a public road for an extended time—especially if inoperable, missing plates, or clearly neglected—may be considered abandoned. These vehicles can block sightlines, leak fluids, or create hazards. Report suspected abandoned vehicles with location, description (make/model/colour/plate or VIN if visible), how long it’s been there, and any safety concerns.
Need to report? To report an abandoned vehicle or parking concern, contact submit a report at Report a Problem. For registration and insurance questions, contact your insurer/registry office.
