Read on for more! | Family Fun Night Grab your lawn chairs or a cozy blanket and head down to Maffeo Sutton Park on Friday, June 26, from 4:30 to 10:30 pm for a memorable evening by the waterfront! This free, family-friendly event is packed with live music, activities, and plenty of entertainment for all ages. As part of the Concerts in the Park series, enjoy performances by Chris Noel and the Burning House from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, followed by New Road Echo from 6:45 to 7:45 pm. Soccer fans won’t want to miss the outdoor viewing party on the big screen, featuring New Zealand vs. Belgium from 8 to 10 pm, made possible through support from a Province of BC grant. To wrap up the night, look to the skies for a spectacular drone show over the harbour, generously supported by the Nanaimo Foundation Stanley de Vos Fund. Parking is limited, so consider walking, cycling, or other transportation options. FAMILY FUN NIGHT | Canada Day Join us in Maffeo Sutton Park this Canada Day for a free, family-friendly celebration! The day will feature live music, food vendors, a bouncy castle, face painting, interactive booths, a multicultural community stage and much more! If you are planning to go, make sure to plan your transportation there ahead of time. RIDE YOUR BIKE - a bike valet will be available through Hub City Cycles at Maffeo Sutton Park from 11 am to 3:30 pm. Ride your bike and drop it off for FREE in a secured location. You will be given a ticket when you check your bike in and then you can go about enjoying the event knowing your bike is safe. PARKING DOWNTOWN - parking at Maffeo Sutton Park will not be available on Canada Day but there are many FREE Parking options near the park (limited accessible parking spots are available on site). You may loop into the park to drop off this year. This downtown parking map will help you. TAKE THE BUS - to support event access, the City of Nanaimo is partnering with the Regional District of Nanaimo to provide free shuttle service from Woodgrove Mall and South Parkway Plaza. Please note: All City facilities are closed on July 1, Westwood Lake Lifeguards are on duty from 12 to 5:30 pm. LEARN MORE | Beban Park Pool Closure A reminder that Beban Park Pool and Weight Room will be closed from June 29 to July 19 for its annual maintenance shutdown. Other swimming options are available at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, the Kin Pool in Bowen Park and Westwood Lake First Beach where lifeguards will be on duty daily from 12-5:30 pm. LEARN MORE | | Temporary Public Art In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, the City of Nanaimo has unveiled Siwul tu Tumuxw (Notice the Land), a subtle sound-based installation by Snuneymuxw artist, Eliot White‑Hill, Kwulasultun. Experienced along Wesley Street in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter, the installation brings the voices of local birds back into the urban landscape, inviting reflection on land, language and Snuneymuxw teachings. LEARN MORE | | Centennial Sports Camp This action-packed sports camp will keep kids moving. Campers will play a variety of sports on the turf fields and in sports courts. Many activities will be introduced, including ultimate frisbee, floor hockey, California kick ball, soccer, lacrosse and more. Daily playground and/or waterpark fun will also be incorporated. This camp does go off-site on day trips riding the bus and/or walking. There are also some swim days scheduled at the pool and lake. Running shoes are required. Try this low-impact exercise to improve balance, core strength, flexibility and posture, crucial for aging bodies. It's tailored to enhance daily movement, reduce fall risk, support bone density and strengthens key muscles in the core, hips and back, making it ideal for maintaining independence and overall vitality. The City website has a calendar where licensed Food Trucks are able to book ahead at City locations to reserve their spot and let their customers know where they are going to be. For more information on Nanaimo construction projects, visit the current Construction page on the City's website. - The eastbound lanes of Townsite Rd (travelling towards Terminal Avenue) will be closed between Holly Avenue and Terminal Avenue from 7am to 3pm, with detours in place. - Third St between Howard Ave and Pine St is closed 24 hrs per day until August 13. Detours are in place.
- Single lane alternating traffic and, at times, eastbound lane closures on Jingle Pot Rd at the intersection of Holland Rd Eastbound traffic watch for possible detour using Holland Rd and Ashlee Rd.
- Single lane alternating traffic on Departure Bay Rd between Doctors Rd and Strongitharm Ave. Expect delays.
- The entrance to Metral Dr from Mostar Rd will experience road closures Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm as FortisBC constructs a natural gas main. Traffic control and detours will be in place.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Rd at Turner Rd and McGirr Rd intersection while crews work on building a new sidewalk and lay a new watermain.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Hammond Bay Rd between Kenwill Dr and McGirr Rd to pave the westbound lane of Hammond Bay Rd. The existing traffic signals at Hammond Bay Rd and Turner Rd intersection will not be operational and will be manually controlled.
- Single lane alternating traffic along Turner Rd from Hammond Bay Rd to Kenning Pl while crews work on replacing the sidewalk. Traffic signals at Hammond Bay Rd and Turner Rd intersection will not be operational and will be manually controlled.
