Master of Digital Media Program Information Webinar
January 5, 2022 

The Master of Digital Media (MDM) program, a collaboration between the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr University of Art + Design and British Columbia Institute of Technology, is a sixteen month internationally recognized, research-informed and industry-relevant professional graduate program that engages students in the development of digital media products.

Join the interactive online session to learn about the Master of Digital Media program. The admissions officer will present an informative overview of the MDM program, including the application process, scholarship opportunities, internship positions, and more. The presentation is followed by a comprehensive Q&A period to answer your questions about the program.

The applications deadline for entry into the Master of Digital Media Fall 2022 cohort is February 4, 2022.

Laiwan: Traces, Erasures, Resists
January 7, 2022 - April 10, 2022

Belkin Art Gallery presents its upcoming exhibition, Laiwan: Traces, Erasures, Resists.

The exhibition highlights the artist’s attention to the material and symbolic vocabularies of print and lens-based media between 1980 and 2000, and features her early interventions into the logic of the book form and the ideology of historical and encyclopedic genres.

The exhibition observes how literary structures are echoed in the apparatus of 35 mm slide, 16 mm film and analogue video projection. Laiwan’s moving image installations explore how this inheritance informs how we write and read images across mediums.

The Phil Lind Initiative Presents: Ed Yong
January 20, 2022

Registration is now open to The Phil Lind Initiative's first event with Ed Yong, Pulitzer Prize-winning science staff writer for The Atlantic, who will be speaking on “The Art of Science Journalism.”

Speaking from his experience writing before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, Yong explores the core of what it means to be a science journalist, how inseparable science is from the rest of society, and how it is shaped by our culture, our social norms, and our collective decisions.

UBC Map the System Info Session & Networking Event
January 20, 2022

Map the System is a global research-based competition that asks you to think differently about social change.

Participants select a social or environmental issue, conduct research, and present the issue in a way that people can share and learn from. Students register to compete at UBC and one team is selected to represent UBC on the global stage. Winners will virtually compete in the Global Final Competition at Oxford University.

Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC)
March 19, 2022 - March 20, 2022

The Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC) is a conference for UBC undergraduate students to showcase their research, either in presentation or poster, in front of their fellow UBC students, family, and friends.

Any UBC undergraduate student who is participating in, or has completed, their own UBC Faculty-supervised research project can apply to present at Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC). All Faculties and Schools are welcome.

Besides presenting, you can apply to volunteer at MURC and attend the event to hear from your fellow students on their research projects.

A Seat at the Table Exhibition

A Seat at the Table is a multi-sited and collaborative exhibition project that explores historical and contemporary stories of Chinese Canadians in BC and their struggles for belonging.

Using food and restaurant culture as an entry point, the project highlights stories that reveal the great diversity of immigrant experiences and of the communities immigrants develop. It also addresses themes of belonging, racism, agency, resilience and reparation as important facets of the complex picture of Chinese migrants and their descendants in the province.

BC Children's Hospital Research Institute is hiring a Work Learn student for the Project Assistant, Writing and Literature Support position.

Working remotely, the Work Learn Student will support the mandate of the Evidence to Innovation (E2i) theme portfolio at the Research Institute, BC Children’s Hospital (BCCHR). The Student will contribute to E2i theme activities, including but not limited to performing literature searches, assisting with meetings and writing tasks, assisting with project development, and support of the E2i team in their daily activities.

The student will learn and assist with research writing activities including Research Ethics Board applications and grant proposals, as well as public-facing communications through E2i social media pages.

The imagineNATIVE Institute Screenwriting Features Lab 2022 Call for Applications
Deadline: January 4, 2022

The Indigenous Screenwriting Features Lab, a year-long lab (January 2022 - December 2022), supports four Indigenous screenwriters, two residing in Canada and two residing internationally.

Over the course of the year, each participant will develop an original feature film script from concept/treatment to final draft. Indigenous story editors will support the writers’ projects at each stage, providing feedback, advice, and writing resources.

Beacon: Journal of Media Studies—Call for Submissions
Deadline: January 7, 2022

Beacon is seeking submissions for academic papers, prose, artwork and new media to be published in our annual online journal.

Students do not have to be enrolled in the Bachelor of Media Studies to submit, as long as the work submitted is related to the field of media studies, including media theory, media analysis (film analysis, new media analysis, art critiques, information policy/visualization research and journalism research), creative works (art, prose, photography, video/audio works and new media/blended-media).

WL W21 Cultural Assistant

UBC English Language Institute is looking for Cultural Assistants to help language learners practice and extend their language study beyond the classroom with students of a similar age and range of interests.

Cultural Assistants encourage participation in social activities by actively engaging and connecting with students, help to facilitate communication and interaction among group members, assist students in and out of class, and have fun with students.

In addition, Cultural Assistants are responsible for event planning, promotion, and ensuring that students enjoy a positive and enriching experience during their study at the English Language Institute (ELI).

World's Challenge Challenge
Deadline: January 9, 2022

The World’s Challenge Challenge is a competition hosted by the UBC Global Lounge, which seeks to engage students on international issues and how they can play a part in sparking social change.

Teams of students–two to three individuals who are current UBC graduate or undergraduate students in good standing—pitch their solutions to global problems for a chance to win up to $6000. Winners go on to compete in the International World's Challenge Challenge, for a top team prize of $30,000.

Collective for Gender+ in Research Engagementship: Distributing a Guide for Data Justice in Community-Based Data Collection Projects
Deadline: January 9, 2022

Collective for Gender+ in Research Engagementship originated in May 2020 with the numerous calls for the collection of disaggregated data along multiple axes of identity, many of which were amplified by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Multiple cohorts, building on each others’ work, addressed a number of questions related to data justice and community-based research, and how community organizations might engage with these concepts.

Throughout the term, a team of 4-5 students will spend 3-5 hours each week to think through a distribution strategy and organize a series of events/initiatives that will ‘put the guide out into the world’ and achieve maximum accessibility.

Connect to Community Grant
Deadline: February 4, 2022

The Connect to Community Grant (C2C) offers UBC undergraduate and master's degree students the opportunity to create and implement a meaningful project in partnership with a local not-for-profit community organization.

Designed as an accessible introduction to the grants experience, the C2C grant strives to be a dynamic learning opportunity. It challenges students to learn from the onset of the application through to project completion, without the fear of failing. We encourage students and community partners to test new ideas.

Applicants can request funds between $200 and $1500 for their proposed project which must be completed within 4 months of receiving funds.

Submissions for the 2022 RAWFILES Magazine print publication are now open for UBC PhotoSoc members.

This year, RAWFILES is looking to feature photographic stories capturing the Natural World—animals in their habitats, spaces rich with natural phenomena, landscape, night skies, wildlife and etc. Showcase your dynamic connection to the natural world. Any photography style, short/long stories, or series are welcomed.
