From the Hearth

Pearson may not have an IB film-making course, but you would never know it after a group of students, led by Bella (YR 50/2025, China), premiered their work at Mint restaurant in Victoria. Growing out of Hearth, a student-led initiative, their movie shows the personal side of the opioid and housing crisis in Victoria. The group’s passion for community and talent for storytelling are impressive and appreciated.

Watch the trailer here and the full feature here. Read their feature in the Times Colonist here and listen to another feature on CBC Radio here.

Making a Connection

Relationships and community connection has always been an important part of Pearson College. Check out this crew (Camille, Chloe, Gabriela, Gera, Joy, Keelia, Geraldine, and Paola) who created Project CONNECT to combat senior social isolation in Greater Victoria. Through storytelling sessions, students document seniors’ lives, creating personalized books that provide companionship and cultural insights.

It’s not just noble, but award-worthy as it garnered an Ingenious Award in the community and civic engagement category. For their work, the group received $1,000 to further their innovative projects. National Winners will be announced later this month. Good luck!

Malala and Pearson Team Up for Education Equality

On April 9, a new partnership was launched at Canada House in London, England as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations. In collaboration with Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, the scholarship will provide opportunities for female students from Pakistan to study at Pearson College. Donate today to support the Malala Yousafzai Peace Scholarship at Pearson College to continue bringing young women who have been denied an education due to conflict and oppression the opportunity they deserve. View our press release on the historic event, the photo gallery and live stream recording!

SPECIAL TOPICS DAY

Indigenous Pedagogies Day

Our Special Topics Day in March was dedicated to Indigenous Pedagogies and perspectives. From Elder teachings and tribal waterway journeys, to monster mask making and Samoan tattoos; the workshops demonstrated how learning, re-learning and fostering relationships are fundamental to the journey of reconciliation.

We express our sincere gratitude to Jo Chrona, who facilitated a morning session, the Elders, members of the SC’IȺNEW First Nation, and all our Indigenous partners who contributed to the eight-afternoon workshops, which shared local knowledge and Indigenous perspectives.

MEET OUR STUDENTS!

Meet Manu and Yolanda

Manu (YR 51, 2026, Congo) a Congolese refugee, fought against all odds to make it to Pearson College.  Now, he’s determined to change the future not just for himself, but for his community. Watch his story and support the next generation of leaders below.

Yolanda (YR 50/2025, China), is becoming the kind of leader who speaks up for equity and women’s rights, starting in her own community. Watch her video to find out how below.

Support the next generation of leaders!

This spring, we’re aiming to raise $50,000 to support scholarships for courageous young leaders like Emmanuel and Yolanda. Your gift today helps students rise above division and lead with compassion in an increasingly fractured world. Will you help us reach our goal?

I WANT TO HELP!

Get to know them!

Two Year 50 students, David (YR 50/2025, South Sudan) and Klara (YR 50/2025, USA) were kind enough to share their time, personalities, and experiences at Pearson. Take a moment to get to know them below!

A Former Prime Minister Headlines the Final Global Affairs

The final Global Affairs speaker series of the school year featured the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark indulging in conversation with Head of College, Jason McBride and fielding questions from students. It was an intersection of politics, diplomacy, economics, and social change conversations and marked a wonderful way to bring the series to a close for the 50th anniversary.

A big thanks to the Canadian Ambassadors Alumni Association for joining us at the event. View the photo gallery here and video recap here.

A Week To Remember!

Our community took part in CAS Week where nearly two dozen unique activities across the island and lower mainland included kayaking, journalism, bikepacking, surfing and service and many more servicer based and fun activities! We want to thank the incredible organizers, chaperones, and generous donors who made our adventurous week happen. View the gallery of activities here

Return to Campus

The College is often honoured by former students returning to campus. In mid April, Bambi (Y28/2003, Thailand) and her family joined us and the visit left quite the impression on us all.

“It was such an honour to spend time with you and get to know some of you better over brunch. You are all so mature, open, intelligent, interesting, ready to challenge yourselves and most of all, curious. It warms my heart to see that UWC values are alive and well. Thank you for making my short stay a very memorable one. I hope that when my daughter grows up to be your age, she will embody the beautiful qualities that you all have. Best of luck with everything ahead. I’ll be rooting for you!”

Hugs,
Bambi

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Everything Was Golden! 🏆

Our community brought their competitive spirit to the pitch and the court. HENEN¸ bested ŦEḴI in a nail-biting finale that involved penalty kicks at the annual Golden Shoe Football Tournament!

But don’t feel too bad for the ŦEḴI team. They still have bragging rights on the court after winning the Golden Hoop Basketball competition!

TED Talks

Three groups of speakers leaned in and a community listened. Pearson TEDx tackled topics around technology and education and the passion was undeniable. The mission of the speaker’s forum is to research and discover “ideas worth spreading” and after three hours in the Max Bell theatre the mission was thoroughly accomplished.

Afro-Carib Cultural Sharing Day

The New Dawn of a Great Afro-Carib Nation broke over campus and the echoes of those ancestors were heard loud and clear. Pearson not only witnessed the moment, but it also seized it. Afro-Carib Cultural Sharing Day was a blast—from morning football to vibrant workshops, a delicious food market, and an electrifying evening show!
