Canada Day at Maffeo Sutton Park

Join us in Maffeo Sutton Park this Canada Day for live entertainment (Moonshine Mollys, The Kiltlifters and The Pickups), a photo booth, face painting by Leaders in Training, bouncy castles, interactive booths, food vendors, a multi-cultural community stage and so much more! FREE FAMILY FUN!

Parking at Maffeo Sutton Park will not be available on Canada Day but there are many FREE Parking options near the park (limited accessible parking spots are available on site). You may loop into the park to drop off this year.

  • RIDE YOUR BIKE - a bike valet will be available through Hub City Cycles at Maffeo Sutton Park from 8:30 am-4:30 pm. Ride your bike and drop it off for FREE in a secured location. You will be given a ticket when you check your bike in and then you can go about enjoying the event knowing your bike is safe.
  • PARKING DOWNTOWN - even though parking is unavailable at the park, there is parking in the downtown area. This downtown parking map will help you.
  • TAKE THE BUS - a shuttle to and from the park will be available for FREE.

Join us for our FREE 2024 Concerts in the Park series. This Friday, enjoy performances by DangerBox, the Shindigs and Maverick Cinema as part of Food Truck Friday in Maffeo Sutton Park.

2024 Coast Salish Games (2024 tsetsuw’ hiw’a’lum’)

Snuneymuxw is proud to host the 2024 Coast Salish Games!

This large-scale multi-sport tournament brings together Indigenous athletes from across the Coast Salish region.

This year's games have also been given a hul'q'umi'num’ name: 2024 tsetsuw’ hiw’a’lum’ (Translation: tsetsuw' = beach + hiw'a'lum' = games / competition).

Snuneymuxw Days 2024

Snuneymuxw's annual 2024 Snuneymuxw Days event will kick off with exhilarating war canoe races at The Point. There will also be a kids zone, food trucks, a vibrant vendor market, and an adrenaline-pumping 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament!

Snuneymuxw Days is also a unique opportunity for non-Snuneymuxw members to visit the Snuneymuxw community, enjoy the festivities, and experience Snuneymuxw culture.

Cool It! Climate Leadership Training Program

Classroom students participate in interactive workshops and games to support discussion and build on knowledge of climate change. Following the workshop, students work on a four-week Cool It! challenge that encourages families to make important changes to their energy consumption.

Commercial Street Night Market

The Commercial Street Night Market brings life, colour and the sounds of summer to downtown Nanaimo.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. Make sure to plan your commute and, if possible, plan an alternate route. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down, follow any detours that may be in place and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Thank you for your patience!

Midtown Water Supply Project

  • Monday, June 24 Jingle Pot Road between the Parkway and Black Diamond Drive will be reduced to one lane in both directions.
  • Black Diamond Drive between Jingle Pot Road and Coal Tyee Trail will be one way directional traffic from Coal Tyee Trail to Jingle Pot Road, a detour in place for entrance into the Black Diamond Drive neighbourhood. This includes Sunday June 23.
  • The trail that connects VIU, the Black Diamond neighbourhood and Third Street remains closed to the public. This area is an active construction site.
  • Commuters pay close attention to signage and for construction traffic as they enter and exit these sections of the project:
    • East Wellington, Westwood Road to Bowen Road
    • Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road
    • Third Street across from the Rotary Fieldhouse
    • College Drive, near the Parkway intersection
    • Jingle Pot Road, near Black Diamond Drive

Midtown Gateway Phase 2B

  • Boxwood Road, to the north Northfield Road, will be partially closed at times and will only serve exiting vehicle traffic from businesses at 2300/2310 Northfield Road. Patrons can enter businesses using their other access points on Northfield Road. Eastbound left turns from Northfield Road onto Boxwood Road will not be permitted. All businesses remain open and accessible.
  • The westbound lanes of Northfield Road, near the intersection of Boxwood Road, will be reduced to single lane. Westbound left turns from Northfield Road onto Boxwood Road will not be permitted.
  • There will be some recurring lane closures on Bowen Road, between Rosstown Road and Northfield Road. Access to Beban Park and Beban Plaza may be affected at times, please use alternate access. All park amenities and programs, and all businesses, remain open and accessible.
  • At times, Rosstown Road will be reduced to single lane alternating traffic between Bowen Road and Whitney Road.

Terminal Avenue

  • Terminal Avenue upgrades are ongoing between Commercial Street and Esplanade Street.
  • The mid-block crosswalk at Gordon Street has been temporarily reinstated without signals.
  • Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Meredith Road Watermain Upgrade

  • Construction work continues Meredith Road between Spencer Road and Thunderbird Drive.
  • Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area if possible. If that is not possible, expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Detours will be instituted where possible.

Extension Road Traffic Calming

  • Commuters can expect delays as construction continues this week.

Princess Street Area Utility Upgrades

  • Expect minor delays on Bing Kee Street between View Street and Princess Street due to stormsewer construction there.
  • Single Lane Alternating Traffic will be in place

Strongitharm Sewer Upgrade

  • Crews will working on the foreshore of Departure Bay between Randle Road and Battersea Road from June 24-28. Public is asked to avoid this area as there will be delays and limited parking given the construction work area.
  • Parking and beach access on Battersea Road will be restricted.
