October 2020

We’re celebrating staff this October Library Month –

October is Library Month, and this year we’re celebrating the staff who keep our libraries thriving.

With Libraries opening up in communities large and small, we know you’re excited to see all of our friendly faces again.

From billboards to buttons, and programs happening for staff all month long, we’re celebrating as loud as we can that we are stronger than ever.

Get Hooked On a New Book Club!

When we asked our librarian moderators what the essential allure of a virtual book club was, they shared enthusiastically:

  • Feeling connected to others through this group activity while unable to safely connect in person.
  • Thought-provoking prompts taking reading enjoyment to another level.
  • Great source of unexpected book recommendations. We feature a range of voices, styles, and content, which can introduce book club members to materials they may never have considered reading otherwise!
  • New titles featured every month, but read at your own pace!
  • A chance to share the enjoyment of a book with people beyond your own community library.
  • Never know when an author might 'Visit'
  • There’s something wonderful about being able to participate in a book club from the comfort of your own home, whether you’re snuggled up in your pyjamas or riding the bus home from work.

What we are reading now:

Meet the Readers of VIRL!

The Reader of the Week initiative is a collection of short video interviews, highlighting our library community, our entire library community!

Each week our team will feature an interview with a Reader of the Week selected from one of our 39-branch communities, as well as our Creativity Commons.

The interview includes how that family or individual uses their library, some of their favourite books and maybe a few surprise tidbits along the way!

This week we spoke with artist and author Roy Henry Vickers about how the library has affected his life and work.

Paying the Land by Joe Sacco

"The Dene have lived in the vast Mackenzie River Valley since time immemorial, by their account. To the Dene, the land owns them, not the other way around, and it is central to their livelihood and very way of being."
