AFTER LAKE MEMPHREMAGOG, THE MAGOG RIVER AND LAKE MAGOG, THE ZEBRA MUSSEL, RELENTLESS, CONTAMINATES THE ST-FRANÇOIS RIVER.

The threat to Lake Massawippi comes from all sides, in a context where vacationers, who have been deprived of their usual summer getaways, are multiplying at the same rate as the pandemic!

We must remind ourselves that Lake Massawippi is by far the most vulnerable to this invasive species and that all experts predict a disaster scenario in the event of an infestation.

The danger is all the more serious since the Saint-François River attracts many light boaters who also enjoy the Tomifobia River, which is also highly vulnerable and the main affluent of Lake Massawippi.

These recreational watercrafts often escape the vigilance of the patrollers because they can access the water in countless places.

We must not let our guard down:

  • Shoreline residents, do not allow any watercraft to access the lake from your shore without first having been washed at one of the washing stations;
  • Paddlers, windsurfers, canoeists, carry your wash certificate with you, as washing is a decision that makes sense for the lake and for you: washing: $5... fine: $200.

LAKE USE IS BOOMING : DISCIPLINE IS IMPERATIVE

Pandemic, heat wave, closed borders and limited travel: the mix of summer 2020 promises record lake use in the Eastern Townships.

On a few occasions since June 20, entries to Massawippi Beach have more than doubled the record days of the previous three years. Overall, there has been a 50% weekly increase in the number of boaters, with an upward trend from week to week.

This trend is the same everywhere, and on both the larger and smaller lakes, there have been reports of clearly dangerous situations this past week. The environmental impact is significant. Boaters, faced with this influx, take refuge in the fragile bays and get very close to the shores. This is a disaster in terms of the proliferation of grass beds, turbidity, blue-green algae outbreaks and erosion.

At Lake Massawippi, many tools are already in place to promote the coordination of uses within the framework of Intelligent Boating:

Download the Ondago application on your smartphone to find out where you are on the lake and how to avoid sensitive areas.

  • Powerboats, pontoons, personal watercraft users: stay in deep water, away from the shoreline, reduce your speed and do not navigate within the 100-metre zone except to go from open water to your shoreline destination.
  • Light vessels: prioritize the 100-metre zone, but avoid navigating in seagrass beds.

Every boater must use his or her watercraft in a safe manner, with due care and attention, and show reasonable consideration for others.

This section of the regulations governing navigation in Canada assumes that users are adapting to the circumstances or else face a penalty of $350 for reckless operation.

BACON' S BAY

Starting next week, residents of Bacon's Bay in Hatley will be visited by our patrollers who will make a specific inventory of the grass beds in front of their property in an effort to comply with Québec’s Ministère de la Faune requirements regarding the possible installation of mats as part of a pilot project.

In a joint effort to restrict the spread of  weeds (Eurasian Watermilfoil), Bacon's Bay is signposted to encourage all boaters to refrain from using it.

SAMPLING

The Blue Patrol conducts daily sampling at over 20 sites around the lake to assess turbidity, and every two weeks at five other sites for comparative health checks.

Transportation issues have delayed the delivery of lab results, with the first health check report scheduled for July 18.
