CALL TO ARTISTS!

2027 Luminous Paths Festival

The City of Nanaimo is seeking proposals for temporary public art as part of the 2027 Luminous Paths festival! Temporary public art projects will be selected in the summer of 2026, with the festival taking place in February of 2027.

Luminous Paths is Nanaimo’s biannual winter festival of light, art, land, and community. The festival features temporary, light-based art installations that transform familiar places into immersive, placemaking experiences after dark.

Luminous Paths invites artists to reimagine public space through illumination, projection, sound, and interactive works that encourage curiosity, play, and connection. Installations are supported by opening and closing celebrations, live performances, and community engagement activities, drawing residents and visitors outdoors during the winter months.

Luminous Paths provides artists with an opportunity to present ambitious, highly visible work, engage broad audiences, and contribute to a growing signature cultural event that celebrates creativity, community, and light in the heart of winter.

New Public Art!

Lost Intersections by Jackie Wong

Last week, we unveiled Lost Intersections, a temporary public art installation by Jackie Wong. The series features three illuminated markers placed at downtown sites connected to Nanaimo’s historic Chinatowns, encouraging residents and visitors to reflect on this important aspect of local heritage.

Each marker displays a red neon Chinese numeral - one, two and three - representing the City’s successive Chinatowns. Mounted on gold backings and enclosed in Plexiglas, the artworks are installed near Esplanade and Victoria Crescent, View Street and Bing Kee Street, and Pine Street and Hecate Street. The pieces are solar-powered and designed to produce soft, energy-efficient lighting that avoids unnecessary brightness and light pollution.

Event Highlight: Family Day

People of all ages filled Beban Park with energy and laughter as the community came together to celebrate the park’s 50th anniversary on Family Day (February 16). The public enjoyed a full day of free activities across the recreation complex, including swimming, skating, arts and crafts, games, live entertainment, and interactive programs with local partners. A warm welcome from Elder Lolly, remarks from dignitaries, and a celebratory cake-cutting marked the milestone, highlighting Beban Park’s long-standing role as a hub for recreation and connection.
