Ozone Therapy

Nature is one of our greatest teachers and providers for those who listen. The powerful medicine of ozone gas therapy is one such example. Created naturally in our upper atmosphere, this colourless gas falls to earth reacting with pollutants along the way, purifying our air. In medicine, it is one of the most potent oxidants making it an extremely effectively anti-microbial. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeast are not equipped with the same antioxidant machinery found in healthy human cells to protect them from such oxidative stress and as a result, are destroyed. In addition to ozone’s direct antimicrobial effects, it also stimulates our antioxidant pathways, up regulating our ability to manage oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Just like working our muscles at the gym, ozone strengthens our antioxidant machinery and modulates our immune system by stimulating the release of helpful immune messengers’ while reducing harmful pro-inflammatory signals. These effects have also been shown to aid in a broad range of immune-mediated conditions, from numerous autoimmune to degenerative disorders.

Aside from the immense immune benefits, ozone also has many other therapeutic uses having demonstrated benefits in over 130 conditions. It supports cardiovascular function by enhancing circulation, improving the flow of red blood cells and increasing oxygen delivery to tissues. With more oxygen available to cells this leads to improved energy production and metabolism at the level of mitochondria, increasing our bodies' production of ATP, our cellular currency for energy. Increased energy and changes in metabolism can lead to reductions in chronic fatigue and pain while improving metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Topically it enhances wound healing and skin health.

To maximize the benefits of ozone, it is best delivered systemically to the entire body. The two most effective methods of safely delivering ozone are through the blood via an intravenous procedure and directly diffusing it into the body via rectal insufflation. To optimize the benefits, a course of several treatments is often recommended. Ozone therapy is offered at the IHC White Rock location.

Post viral support and the role of high dose vitamin C (HDVC)

Fatigue is common after viral infections. In order to answer the question does HDVC help with post viral fatigue, these two researchers reviewed the results of nine clinical studies looking at this, enrolling a total of 720 participants.

Three of the four controlled trials they identified found a significant decrease in fatigue scores in the HDVC group compared to the control groups.

Four of the five observational studies they identified found a significant reduction in fatigue, with symptoms including sleep disturbance, lack of concentration, depression, and pain also being alleviated.

Oxidative stress, inflammation, and circulatory issues are important contributors to fatigue in many post viral syndromes. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, endothelial-restoring, & immune effects of HDVC make it a suitable treatment option.

High-dose Vitamin C Enhances Cancer Immunotherapy

(Sci Transl MedSci Transl Med. 2020 Feb 26;12(532))

This Italian study was designed to answer the question, does high-dose Vitamin C (HDVC) improve the benefit of the new immune checkpoint therapy (ICT) drugs being used for cancer treatment?

Here at IHC, we have long offered a powerful naturopathic integrative treatment approach to optimize immune function. For example, one of the the treatments we offer HDVC, is already known to directly impair cancer cell growth in preclinical models and to modulate several anticancer immune responses.

In this new Italian study, they have added to our knowledge of HDVC for cancer immunotherapy, showing that:

  • A fully functional immune system is necessary to maximize the anti-cancer effects of immunotherapy, including HDVC and ICI’s
  • HDVC increases the infiltration of the tumor microenvironment by immune cells
  • HDVC delays cancer growth in a T cell-dependent manner
  • HDVC enhances the cytotoxic activity of adoptively transferred CD8 T cells
  • HDVC co-operates with immune checkpoint therapy (ICT) in breast, colon, melanoma and pancreatic murine cancers
  • The combination of HDVC & ICT can be curative in models of mismatch repair-deficient tumors with high mutational burden.
  • This work provides a rationale for further and larger clinical trials combining HDVC with ICT for human cancers.

Please talk to one of your IHC CCC doctors to learn what can be done to optimize your immune function in order to best manage your cancer.

In the News

PAP Testing

Access to cervical cancer screening (PAP testing) is a huge issue right now. This topic is not in the news nearly as much as it should be and I don’t even think that people are talking to each other about it. Many women are having a hard time getting in to see their family doctor or gynecologist for their regular PAP test, which should be maximum every 3 years. Also, most medical doctors are primarily having patient visits on the phone and have limited in person visits. Many people are also behind schedule for their PAP due to lockdown during early 2020.

If you are struggling to access routine cervical cancer testing, please know that at IHC Fort Langley and South Surrey many of our doctors perform this important test. We schedule you for 15 minutes, take time to explain things to you, answer your questions and make sure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. We even contact you with the results when we receive them. If you have any questions about this service or want to book an appointment, please contact our clinic.

Food for Thought

Kid-friendly Keto Bread

Ingredients:

- cooking spray (we just line the loaf pan)

- 7 eggs, at room temperature

- ½ cup butter, melted and cooled

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- 2 cups blanched almond flour

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon xantham gum

- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Directions:

1- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a loaf pan and line tin with parchment paper.

2- Whisk eggs in a bowl until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add melted butter and olive oil; mix until well combined.

3- Combine almond flour, baking powder, xanthan gum, and salt in a separate bowl; mix well. Add gradually to the egg mixture, mixing well until a thick batter is formed.

*Xanthum gum improves the texture. The brand we have is Bob's Red Mill which is sold in most grocery stores.

4- Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

5- Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 45 minutes

*note: this bread contains NUTS - almond meal - and is therefore not appropriate for school lunches if your school is nut-free.
