New Temporary Public Art!

The City’s Temporary Public Art Program offers artists of diverse backgrounds and skillsets the opportunity to create artwork for public spaces in Nanaimo. This summer and fall, newly unveiled Temporary Public Art projects and projects-soon-to-come can be enjoyed in several locations around the city.

Here is what to see and where to find them:

Chimes for the South End

by Jesse Gray: Deverill Square Gyro 2 Park

Chimes for the South End is an interactive sound sculpture meant to evoke a patch of tall plants clustered together like reeds in a marsh, flowers in a meadow, or grass on a prairie. The artwork emits sound only when someone chooses to interact with it. Gently moving the steel ‘stems’ will cause them to sway, allowing the bronze forms atop each one to touch and chime together. Each of these improvised bells was made by casting a piece of plastic trash found in the neighbourhood into solid bronze.

Moon Snail House

by Amber Morrison & Matthew Fox: Pipers Lagoon Park

Located on the bluff in Pipers Lagoon Park with a view of the sea, Moon Snail House is inspired by the shell of a Lewis’s moon snail, one of the largest marine mollusks found in our local intertidal areas. This large-scale artwork invites visitors to become active participants, allowing them to enter the sculpture to experience the environment from a new perspective. The two artists aim to connect small structures like the artwork to the topic of housing, encouraging reflection on who has the opportunity to live by the sea and access it. As the moon snail naturally grows its shell—a house-like structure—it prompts us to ask: What essential lessons can we learn about housing from this creature?

Coming Soon:

Siwul tu Tumuxw

by Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun: Old City Quarter

ReWilders

by Robert Turriff: Colliery Dam Park

Where Does the Art Come From?

You may have noticed artwork appearing on utility and traffic cabinets around town and wondered where the artwork comes from and who is responsible. These art wraps represent original artwork created by artists on the City’s Urban Design Roster, and are commissioned in a collaborative effort between the City’s Culture team and the Public Works team.

Utility and traffic cabinets are a visible part of communities across the city. As such, they offer a canvas to celebrate the City and its neighbourhoods through public art providing a sense of place and fostering community pride. Additionally, the presence of art and a vinyl wrap assists in the prevention and remediation of graffiti.
