We hope you've been enjoying your summer so far! We headed out and about again to share some upcoming events and reminders for the month of August. 

Reuse Rendezvous event happening August 13 and 14 in Nanaimo

Reuse Rendezvous

Participate in the City’s Reuse Rendezvous August 13 and 14. Place unwanted toys, sporting goods, furniture, books, bikes and other items at your curb for others to take and reuse them. Be sure to mark items with a "FREE" tag. Items set out should not block sidewalks and bike lanes. Any leftover items must be removed from the curb by Monday, August 15. Happy hunting!

REUSE RENDEZVOUS EVENT INFO

celebrating 40 years of the LIT program in Nanaimo

LIT Celebration

The City of Nanaimo is commemorating 40 years of the Leaders in Training (LIT) Program. If you are a former participant, you are invited to the celebration! The event will take place at the Beban Park Social Centre on Friday, August 19, between 5-9 pm. If you are able to make it, please RSVP by emailing emily.hoppe@nanaimo.ca. We hope to see you there!

Recycling Right

Recycle right to ensure fees are kept low, materials get recycled and to maintain services to our homes. Please remember to:

  • Rinse containers well
  • Don't stack items together
  • Do not put items in bags
  • Flatten your cardboard
  • Remove string, tape or ribbon

You can download the Nanaimo Recycles app and use the "what goes where tool" if you are unsure about where to recycle a specific item. If you have any questions call the recycling hotline at 1-800-667-4321.

All Fires Prohibited in the City of Nanaimo and no smoking in parks

Open Fires Prohibited

The City of Nanaimo has followed the Province of BC and placed a ban on campfires (including cooking fires). 

A reminder smoking is not permitted in City parks or on trails. 

When smoking in designated areas, please properly extinguish and safely dispose cigarettes to prevent mulch and grass fires.

Fall programs will be available online august 12 and registration begins August 17

Fall Registration

The Fall 2022 Activity Guide will be available online starting Friday, August 12. Mark your calendars, registration for fall programs will open on August 17. There are three ways to register:

  • Online

  • In person at Beban Park, Bowen Park, Nanaimo Aquatic Centre & Oliver Woods Community Centre

Road work along highway 19 near Lantzville will take place mid august with temporary lane closures follow signage

Road Resiliency Along Highway 19

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure are installing a larger culvert system and improving drainage under the slope adjacent to Highway 19 near Lantzville. Crews are working mid-August between 7 pm and 5 am so expect temporary lane closures and reduced speed limit. Please follow instructions from traffic control personnel and signage to ensure the safety of everyone. Thank you!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • 24 hour a day road closures are taking place on Rock City Road from Ocean Pearl Terrace to Landalt Road August 8 to 26.
  • Work taking place on Boxwood Road and Northfield Road. Please slow down and obey signage on site.
  • Metral Drive is still an active construction area. Traffic control will aim to keep traffic flowing; however, please display patience for the workers as they endeavor to do this work as quickly as they can.
  • Fourth Street between Bruce Avenue and Pine Street is open, however work is still taking place. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Holland Road between Jingle Pot Road and Ashlee Road. Access to buses and local traffic only. Other commuters should plan an alternate route.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Cottleview Drive and Hillside Avenue between Caldwell Street and Pacific Edge Way. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Mobility upgrades are taking place at the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Sixth Street. Commuters should expect minor delays.
  • Park Avenue between Fifth Street and Seventh Street will be closed in both directions for a sanitary sewer upgrade. The road closure will be in place for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access is available for local traffic and emergency vehicles only. A detour will be in place using Bruce Avenue and the closure will remain in effect until the sewer upgrade project is completed in September.
