Nanaimo Fire Rescue is is hosting an open house in support of this year's Fire Prevention Week. October 23, from 2:30 - 4:30 pm at Fire Station #1, 666 Fitzwilliam Street. There will be CPR demonstrations, fire prevention education, emergency preparedness materials, kids turnout gear and more!

Halloween Howl Swim

Join our spooky Halloween swim at Beban Park Pool on Sunday, October 27 from 9 am to 12 pm. Please note, regular admissions apply.

Get ready for the roads

Now that we have entered stormy season, make sure to be extra cautious on the roads. Please slow down and expect roads to be extremely slippery when wet. Always have winter safety and emergency equipment in your car. A basic car kit should contain the following:

  • Food that won't spoil, such as energy bars
  • Water in bottles that won't break if the water freezes
  • Blanket
  • Extra clothing and shoes or boots
  • First aid kit with seatbelt cutter
  • Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
  • Candle in a deep can and matches
  • Wind‑up flashlight
  • Whistle
  • Printed roadmaps
  • Copy of your emergency plan

Items to keep in your trunk:

  • Sand, salt or cat litter (non-clumping)
  • Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
  • Tow rope
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light or road flares

Public Works Yard Updates

The Public Works Yard Update AAP ends next week

Just over a week left in Public Works Yard Updates AAP

The City of Nanaimo is conducting an alternative approval process (AAP) to seek elector approval to adopt “Public Works Yard Updates Borrowing Bylaw 2024 No. 7386”. If adopted, this bylaw would allow the City to borrow up to $90 million to finance the cost of replacing the fleet maintenance and crew/administration buildings at the Public Works Yard.

Free 45-minute tours of the Public Works Yard take place on October 23 from 9 am to 12 pm. Registration is required. More info on the project and how to register can be found on the Public Works Yard Updates Project site.

This AAP began on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. The deadline for submitting completed and signed elector response forms is 4:30 pm on Thursday, October 31, 2024.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down, follow any detours that may be in place and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions and a reminder that construction zone speed limit is 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted. Thank you for your patience!

Midtown Gateway Phase 2B: Expect delays and single lane on the following roads:

  • Powder Works Road is now open to vehicle traffic, cyclists, pedestrians and the #30 bus, and replaces the Bowen and Rosstown intersection as the new access point for Rosstown Road. Rosstown Road is now permanently closed to vehicles access from Bowen Road.
  • Expect delays and single lane traffic on Bowen, Rosstown, Northfield and Boxwood Roads
  • The traffic signals at Northfield and Boxwood Road have changed, use extra care.
  • The south access to Beban Park will be closed 24 hours per day. Please exit the park from the other end. All park amenities and programs remain open and accessible.
  • All businesses remain open.

Midtown Water Supply Project

  • Expect minor delays in the following areas:
    • Bowen Road between Pryde Avenue and Meredith Road.
    • Labieux Road between Kenworth Road and Beban Parkway.
    • Madsen Road between Boxwood Road and East Wellington Road.
  • All businesses in all these remain open and accessible.

Commercial Street Improvements – Wharf to Church Street

  • Businesses on Commercial Street remain open as usual and pedestrian access along the street is open.
  • Temporary FREE 2 hour street parking downtown began on October 1!
  • Commercial Street between Wharf and Church Street is closed to vehicles.

Townsite Area Utility Upgrades - Phase 1

  • Expect minor delays and detours on Oakley Street, Chelsea Street, Cadogan Street, St Andrews Street, Girvin Avenue, and Millstone Avenue from 7am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Tree dedication in memory of Lisa Marie Young and all MMIWG2S+

On October 18, family, friends and supporters gathered to dedicate a tree in memory of Lisa Marie Young and to honour all missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people. The dedication can be found on the north end of the Departure Bay waterfront walkway.
