Reporting on Black Communities 101 with Eternity Martis
February 25th, 2021, 12:00-1:30 PM (PST)

The UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media is pleased to invite you to Reporting on Black Communities 101, an online workshop conducted by UBC Journalist-in-Residence, Eternity Martis.

Martis will look back at the history of Black Canadians, and their representation in the media, in order to understand the legacy of oppression, discrimination and systemic racism that are entrenched in society and media coverage. Register for the event below.

Doing Stories Justice Speaker Series: Stories for a Just Transition

They will define a just transition as a framework of strategies to transition our economy to one that is ecologically sustainable, equitable, and where all communities thrive. Ziegler Lecture: Jamele Watkins, “From Celebrity to Saint: Angela Davis in East Germany”
March 3, 2021, 12:00-1:00PM (PST)

This lecture examines various objects taken in the Free Angela archive. In it, Dr. Watkins analyzes multiple curious objects, meaning-making, and their relationship to Davis and to East Germany. Dr. Watkins reads these objects (e.g., charms, scarves, shoes, a purse) as gifts, small tokens meant to encourage Davis while in prison.

Submit your paper for the 17th annual Art History Undergraduate Symposium, a public event for students, faculty, and staff to engage with a range of student research from this year's cohort.

As a symposium speaker, you will:

  • have a chance to have your paper workshopped in a valuable peer-review process
  • gain experience presenting your research in an academic setting
  • receive feedback from faculty and students
  • build your academic CV for grad school applications, awards, and future jobs

If you are an upper-year undergraduate student (in your 3rd year or beyond) you are eligible to coordinate a Student Directed Seminar. UBC students can register in two Student Directed Seminars during their degree: once as Coordinator and once as a participant.

Digital Media (DMED) 540 Courses - Summer 2021

For current Year 4 and Year 3 BMS students interested in taking online courses this summer (2021S) that fulfill your Core Plus requirement, you may be interested in taking one of the Digital Media (DMED) courses offered by the Centre for Digital Media to BMS students. There will be four DMED courses offered this summer. They will run from May 14 - August 6, 2021. 

To learn more about each course, please click the “Course Syllabus” button for each course to read the course description and syllabus. DMED courses are exclusive for BMS students, so we hope you take advantage of these courses, it’s a great way to explore and try out some challenging media content!

DMED 540 001: User Experience
May 14, 2021 - August 6, 2021
Fridays, 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Zoom

This course exposes students to concepts that relate to defining, designing and evaluating product concepts and interfaces.  We will also spend time discussing how to lead the “fuzzy front end” of design, including client management, determining a generative research direction, differentiating between research methods, and how to communicate your research findings and design decisions. Students will spend class time exploring and discussing these concepts.

DMED 540 002: Teaching For Digital Media
May 14, 2021 - August 6, 2021
Fridays, 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Zoom

This course provides an effective encounter between the "what to teach" and "how to teach." The main goal is to provide the fundamentals for using curriculum to teach digital media while helping One intention is to help students develop a framework for understanding themselves as a teacher. A second major intention will be to provide students with an understanding of what teaching digital media entails. This course focuses on teaching and learning, lesson planning, and practice teaching.

DMED 540 004: Building an E-Commerce Ecosystem
May 14, 2021 - August 6, 2021
Fridays, 10:00 – 12:00 PM on Zoom

This 13-week course will enable students to get a thorough understanding of the full e-commerce
ecosystem including branding, user research, online shop set-up, marketing, inventory management, online shipping, order management, SEO, and customer management. Students will also get an overview of the e-commerce pipeline, research and compare the most popular platforms, and develop the necessary skills for building a tangible e-commerce business strategy using digital tools.
