Welcome Back BMS, to Term 2!

We hope you’ve had a fantastic start to Term 2, BMS students!

As per the latest update from UBC President Santa Ono shared yesterday, the majority of instruction will be delivered in-person from February 7 until the end of Winter Session, Term 2.

We are here to support you – if you are experiencing any challenges at any point that may prevent you from arriving by the start of in-person classes for Term 2 (February 7, 2022), we encourage you to please contact us (arts.mediastudies@ubc.ca and bms.advisor@ubc.ca) as soon as possible so that we can provide you with timely support.

BMS Peer Mentorship: VISA, JRNL & CPSC

Calling all BMS First-Year students! Are you looking for help with your JRNL, VISA, and CPSC classes? BMS Peer Mentors @bms_peermentor Gabrielle and Ky have organized a virtual mentorship session about JRNL projects, editing program tutorials for VISA (Adobe Creative Suite), and essential CPSC tips.

🗓 Date: Wednesday, February 9th, 2022
⏰ Time: 2:00-3:00 PM (PST)
📍 Location: ZOOM (you can find the Zoom meeting link in your email!)

They will cover:

☑️ Example projects for JRNL & VISA
☑️ Exam tips for JRNL & CPSC
☑️ Key advice for doing well in VISA for those who might be new or experienced
☑️ Useful tutorials on editing programs (Adobe Photoshop)
☑️ Additional tips from course instructors and TAs
☑️ Any other questions you have!

If you already have questions that you’d like your mentors to answer or have specific areas of the Adobe Creative Suite you’d like to be covered in the tutorials, please submit them here by February 4th so that your mentors can prepare for them beforehand. Or as always, feel free to just come out to the session and hear what your peers have asked and what your mentors will share! It’s a great way to connect with your peers, upper-year BMS students, and BMS community.

Please note that all appointments are available online on a first-come, first-served basis. The photo session includes grad portraits and casual and dressy outfits.

[Screening+Conversation] Reunification

This event, [Screening+Conversation] Reunification, organized by the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative, offers an online screening and a conversation with the director, Alvin Tsang.

Filmed over a 17-year period, this award-winning film gives an insider view on the contemporary Asian American immigrant experience, family psychology, and personal filmmaking. In the film, Director Alvin Tsang reflects on his family’s migration from Hong Kong to Los Angeles in the early 1980s – fraught with betrayal from his parent's divorce, economic strife and communication meltdown between parents and children.

2021-2022 Colloquia Series: Posters with Glitter Issues
February 3, 2022

Join Dr. Jessica Lapp (UofT) for an overview of the Newberry Library and their collection of 2017 Chicago Women’s March ephemera. The talk explores the ‘leaky’ nature of feminist and queer protest ephemera by ‘following the glitter’ through the Newberry Library’s collection. The event requires registration in advance and will be held online via Zoom.

Dr. Jessica Lapp’s research conceptualizes feminist records creation, expanded notions of provenance and records attribution, and the creation and circulation of digital records of feminist organizing.

Mixed Messages: Mediating Native Belonging in Asian Russia
February 3, 2022

Join the virtual Sawchen Lecture Series, featuring Dr. Kathryn Graber of Indiana University on February 3, 2022, at 12:30 pm (PST).

Focusing on language and media in eastern Siberia, Mixed Messages (Cornell University Press, 2020) engages debates about the role of minority media in society, alternative visions of modernity, and the impact of media on everyday language use. In this book talk, Kathryn Graber will address questions about language, production, circulation and consumption of media, and their impacts on the everyday social practices through her ethnography of the Russian Federation’s Buryat territories, a multilingual and multiethnic region on the Mongolian border with a complex relationship to both Europe and Asia.

Geospatial Analysis & Visualization with Python
February 14, 2022

In this workshop, you will be instructed to use a dataset that focuses on a difficult yet crucial dataset with political significance, Police Killings in Canada from 2000-2017, obtained from Pivot Legal Society and initially collected by the CBC.

Using the dataset, you will have the opportunity to visualize the data, investigate racial disparities, and make an infographic using a provided Jupyter Notebook. The end goal of this workshop is to familiarize you with using Python for GIS, and show that programming and data analysis can be powerful tools for promoting social and environmental justice issues.

Decolonizing Research: Collecting Two-Spirit Data in Culturally Affirming Way
February 22, 2022

This event is part of the Women’s Health Seminar Series, which showcases multidisciplinary research on women’s health. The goal of the series is to provide multidisciplinary training and mentorship for trainees, across a broad range of women’s health research topics.

Harlan Pruden (nēhiyo/First Nations Cree Nation), working with and for the Two-Spirit community locally, nationally and internationally, is an Educator at Chee Mamuk, an Indigenous public health program at BC Centre for Disease Control. Harlan Pruden will guide attendees understand what and who is Two-Spirit and the differences between non-Indigenous understandings, notions and ways such as LGBTQI, addressing his research in how to collect Two-Spirit data in a culturally affirming and sensitive way.

A Seat at the Table Exhibition

A Seat at the Table is a multi-sited and collaborative exhibition project that explores historical and contemporary stories of Chinese Canadians in BC and their struggles for belonging.

Using food and restaurant culture as an entry point, the project highlights stories that reveal the great diversity of immigrant experiences and of the communities immigrants develop. It also addresses themes of belonging, racism, agency, resilience and reparation as important facets of the complex picture of Chinese migrants and their descendants in the province.

The Chapman and Innovation Grants (C&I) offer UBC students the opportunity to create and carry out a meaningful project in partnership with a local not-for-profit community organization. The C&I grants are designed to help students work with a community organization to test a new idea and take initiative in tackling an issue affecting underrepresented populations in their local communities.

Connect to Community Grant
Deadline: February 4, 2022

The Connect to Community Grant (C2C) offers UBC undergraduate and master's degree students the opportunity to create and implement a meaningful project in partnership with a local not-for-profit community organization.

Designed as an accessible introduction to the grants experience, the C2C grant strives to be a dynamic learning opportunity. It challenges students to learn from the onset of the application through to project completion, without the fear of failing. We encourage students and community partners to test new ideas. Applicants can request funds between $200 and $1500 for their proposed project which must be completed within 4 months of receiving funds.

Do you have a project in mind and are looking for funding? The UBC and AMS Global Fund offers grants of up to $2,000 for student-led initiatives with an international or intercultural focus. All currently enrolled UBC Vancouver students are encouraged to apply.

You are strongly encouraged to schedule a consultation appointment before submitting your application. Applicants who consulted with the Global Fund Committee increased their success rate by 100%.

UBC Map the System
Deadline: February 7, 2022

Map the System is a global research-based competition that asks you to think differently about social change. Participants select a social or environmental issue, conduct research, and present the issue in a way that people can share and learn from.

Students register to compete at UBC and one team is selected to represent UBC on the global stage. Winners will virtually compete in the Global Final Competition at Oxford University.

Designing Your Future – Career Exploration Studio
February 22 - February 24, 2022

The Designing Your Future – Career Exploration Studio is a small pilot program for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts. It is being offered for the first time during the February 2022 Reading Week.

The program consists of four virtual workshops and two virtual workplace experiences with alumni (Arts graduates), all of which are designed to support you in exploring what career means in the bigger picture of your life, learning about a range of workplaces where Arts alumni are employed, and leveraging your Arts degree in a job search.

Submissions for the 2022 RAWFILES Magazine print publication are now open for UBC PhotoSoc members.

This year, RAWFILES is looking to feature photographic stories capturing the Natural World—animals in their habitats, spaces rich with natural phenomena, landscape, night skies, wildlife etc. Showcase your dynamic connection to the natural world. Any photography style, short/long stories, or series are welcomed.

Submissions for RAWFILES Magazine online publication are open to all UBC students, alumni and staff, all year-round.

Deadline to Drop Courses without a "W standing" Extended to Feb. 6

The deadline to drop most courses without a W standing has been extended to Sun, Feb 6 at 11:59 pm (PST).

As the BMS program is cohort-based, a reminder that BMS students are expected to NOT drop their mandatory Core Courses as you may not have a secured spot in the same course the following year.
