I met my case manager, Jean Francois, at a time when I felt truly unmotivated. He never pushed me, but he would offer mini-challenges with practical step-by-step advice to help me slowly get back on my feet. He recommended some in-person courses at the centre, and introduced me to two or three other coaches who helped me understand my interests, polish my resume and cover letter, and explore different possibilities. I attended numerous in-person workshops and 1:1 sessions to be able to present the best version of myself. I kept pushing myself to improve, and probably met and worked with everyone in the WorkBC Midtown West office. Eventually, I found a new job and was working for 7 months in a full-time role, but was laid off once again in April 2020. I decided to take 12 months off to reset my priorities. I used this time to study online with some free resources such as Harvard X, as recommended by Jean Francois. Even if I took one or two courses at a time, I kept moving forward. I became more active on LinkedIn and started to look for full-time jobs once again. In my career, there have been only two companies that really interested me. Over the years, they have always been on my radar. In the summer of 2021, I applied to a position for company #1 but didn't hear back until early September, when they invited me for a phone interview. In late September, I also applied to company #2 and was offered a casual position to fill in for a maternity leave. I thought, "Why not? This could open a lot of different opportunities for me." I began to support a VP as her executive assistant in a large healthcare company. In mid-October, company #1 invited me to an interview and presented me with a job offer for a permanent, full-time position. I was transparent and told my current employer that I was planning to leave as I wanted a permanent job for security. My boss was disappointed but asked, "What if we could offer you something permanent?" Fast forward two days later: HR connected me with another higher-up, who was so impressed with my skills that he offered to create a new position to bring me on his team. He offered me a permanent position with a promotion. I couldn't believe my luck and how much this company believes in me. If I never asked, I would not know how much my company values my contribution. I would not be able to share such a success story if I didn't continue to move forward. Even in my darker days, I took baby steps and kept moving ahead. I am thankful for all the career coaches who have helped me. I hope my story can inspire you to keep moving forward and to never stop believing in yourself. | Multiple positions available: Labourer (Term Role), Administrative Assistant, and more Trans Mountain Corporation View postings Multiple positions available: Sales Coordinator, Accounting Clerk, and more AES Engineering View posting Calibration Technologist Lab Test View posting Multiple positions available: Customer Success Specialist, Administrative Assistant (Data Services), and Graphic Designer Global Relay View posting Multiple positions available: Senior Payroll & Benefits Administrator, Chief Operating Officer, and more Pedalheads View posting Multiple positions available: HR & Corporate Services Administrator, Senior Business Analyst, and more BC Infrastructure Benefits View posting Multiple positions available: Business Intelligence Analyst, Service Advisor, and Retail Supervisor Rad Power Bikes View posting Warehouse Associate Refrigerative Supply View posting For more postings, please visit our Job Boards on the Client Hub. | | | | |
