March 7th, 2021

Dear Members,

Welcome to UBCO’s Recreation Newsletter, a way of connecting with all of you to keep you informed of Recreation updates, announcements and upcoming events now. With the exception of this issue, new issues will be released on the last Sunday of every month.

As we wrap up Move UBC month, I’m hoping that you continue to find ways to move more, move well and move in ways that are comfortable, empowering and motivating for you, year-round. I’ve formed a virtual running group with some friends on past sports teams in a way to stay connected. Now, I was never one to love cardio let alone like it - however, when I created an accountable, virtually social environment for this activity, I discovered that I really enjoyed being outdoors with only myself and my thoughts. Running (let’s get real - it’s a jog) helped to release the cooped up energy I was generating and I found that I could still connect with my friends through activity. Not only that, I was much more productive afterwards. This March, I challenge you to find ways to connect with friends through physical activity in a safe, socially distanced way whether it be sharing your activity photos, joining them on virtual recreation activities or creating an activity challenge leaderboard.

- Crystal Westgate,

Physical Activity & Wellbeing Coordinator

Member Connect Story

"I was inspired to register for the Physical Activity Coaching Program because of hip, neck and back pain that I started dealing with while working from home (I think almost everyone can relate on that one). My coach has been encouraging me to incorporate movement breaks into my day and shares helpful strategies to remove barriers so I can be more successful with my activity. This has created such a difference in my work from home life and I am feeling better already after a month of being more active. A month ago Tylenol helped manage my back pain, but it is no longer need since I introduced yoga/walking/standing breaks."

- Shannon Hohl,

Graduate Administor, School of Engineering
