Invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) - increase in cases provincially

The Ministry of Health has reported a recent province-wide increase of iGAS cases above the expected seasonal trends. The highest rates of iGAS are being seen within those under four years of age and 65 years of age and older.

Persons at increased risk for development of iGAS include those who:

  • are infants and those under four years of age,
  • are pregnant or postpartum,
  • are of older age and with immunocompromising conditions,
  • have had recent chickenpox infection,
  • are experiencing homelessness,
  • inject drugs

In an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality, we are requesting our health care partners:

  • Provide prompt assessment and treatment for patients with symptoms of non-invasive GAS such as pharyngitis and skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Be on alert for complications of GAS and consider iGAS as possible cause in patients with severe illness.
  • Provide early testing and intervention if iGAS is suspected.
  • Continue to encourage your patients to remain up-to-date on their immunizations, particularly varicella vaccine.
  • Report all iGAS cases and clusters to Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.
