Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (SARS-CoV-2 receptor) Expression in Human Skeletal Muscle

Drs. Robert Boushel, Jose Calbet (Affiliate professor), Hans Christer Holmberg (Affiliate Professor), and colleagues have published a study investigating Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) in skeletal muscle. ACE2 enzymes generate proteins that control blood pressure. The SARS-CoV-2 virus penetrates human cells by binding to ACE2 receptors, causing COVID-19 infections. The study found that muscle ACE2 protein expression is higher in those with more body fat and lower in individuals with high cardiorespiratory fitness and low body fat.

Perceptual-cognitive Skills, Methods, and Skill-based Comparisons in Interceptive Sports

Congratulations to Nikki Hodges, Pearson Wyder-Hodge, Shawn Hetherington, Joseph Baker, Zachary Besler, and Miriam Spering for their published "Topical Review: Perceptual-cognitive Skills, Methods, and Skill-based Comparisons in Interceptive Sports." In this article, the authors provide “definitional clarity regarding whether a skill is primarily visual attentional (ranging from fundamental/low-level skills to high-level skills) or cognitive.” They review those skills that have been studied using sport-specific stimuli or tests, such as postural cue anticipation in baseball, and those that are mostly devoid of sport context and considered general skills, such as dynamic visual acuity.

What is UBC Thrive?

This November is Thrive month: a time when we can come together as a UBC community, virtually or in-person, to learn about, talk about, and explore ways to support our mental health. The last 18 months have brought unprecedented challenges, impacting the mental health of our community, so now more than ever, it is important that we support one another in learning to thrive. Thrive prioritizes promoting mental health literacy, reducing stigma, reflecting on diverse perspectives and experiences, and creating a supportive campus culture. At the same time, we ensure that UBC community members have the resources to help them understand mental health issues, and improve coping skills, which is what Thrive is all about - building mental health, living, learning, and working well.

The School has many faculty members whose research focus is on exercise and mental health. Most recently, Dr. Eli Puterman led a study about the benefits of exercise in reducing depression symptoms and discussed it with Simi Sara on her show, Mornings with Simi. Click here to listen to the full interview.

The School of Kinesiology works with UBC Wellbeing and other UBC faculties and units to contribute to the educational materials and events offered throughout the month. We hope that you, our alumni, can take time to reflect on your mental health needs both in the work world and at home. The School has compiled a list of tips and mental health organizations on its website which you can access here.

Thrive is for everyone: we all have mental health, and while it might look and feel different for each of us, we all benefit from maintaining and fostering it. Whatever your pathway to mental health may be, we invite you to learn about it, talk about it and explore it during Thrive.
