January is often a time to reflect on what was accomplished in the past year and to look ahead on how to begin anew. For many, that may mean new goals, new classes, new professors, new workouts, and a growing to-do list. It is a month that is filled with goal setting, vision boards, activities, and lot of new faces in Hangar and Gymnasium. Goal setting is an important piece to my own personal development and something that I pursue on a regular basis. However, I’ve decided to take a different approach to it this year by allowing myself to be present for the simple joys and moments in life. Too many times, I’ve let a moment pass me by without realizing later that if I had not been distracted by the many other things, I could have realized how precious and important it could be. I’ve also challenged myself to find ways to push myself outside of my comfort zones by getting in as much fresh air as possible in the outdoors, even when the temperatures drop. I find that cloudy days tend to affect my mood and even if I cannot get my vitamin D from the sun, the fresh air does wonders for me. I intend on building snowmen with my children, talking my dog on walks, introducing my kittens to the snow, and getting my heart beating by racing my partner and kids on toboggins on the local hills. January is an excellent time to start thinking about how you can move your body in the ways that you feel best. Grab a friend or coworker, or join a club to partake in activities together. Better yet, apply for a Move UBC grant to get funding for movement to help reduce financial physical activity barriers. Don’t know where to start? Join Get Active 101 to join others in a variety of Recreation activities available. Want to try something new? Get involved with Skating at Stuart Park, Boxing at Mad Katz or cheer on your Heat basketball or volleyball teams as they prepare for playoffs. Move. Play. Train.
