The role of our new campus in reshaping the future of health care

The Ottawa Hospital is in the midst of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to plan and develop a state-of-the-art new hospital campus and research centre near Dow’s Lake in downtown Ottawa.

As part of our overall efforts to reshape the future of health care, our new campus will improve access to care and expand support for life-saving research and innovation that will see benefits regionally and even globally.

Here are some highlights:

• With 641 single patient rooms – each equipped with a private, accessible washroom – TOH is prioritizing private space for patients and their families during hospital stays. Inpatient rooms at the new campus will improve privacy and rest for care and recovery, while enhancing infection prevention and control.

• The new campus will be home to Eastern Ontario’s trauma centre, the most advanced in the region. With input from experienced physicians, nurses and trauma surgeons, TOH is designing emergency care for the future. This includes a rooftop helipad and dedicated access routes for ambulances, enhanced spaces to optimize trauma team workflows, and expanded cardiac monitoring and CT scanning in the emergency department.

• Operating rooms (ORs) at the new campus will be larger than what is currently available, and there will be more of them. This flexibility will accommodate new equipment and technology within the ORs and help meet projected needs for surgeries in the future.

• As a global leader in health-care research, TOH will be expanding its Biotherapeutics manufacturing Centre (BMC) to the new campus. The expanded BMC will be part of a larger ambulatory care and research building and will boost capacity to develop and manufacture life-saving biotherapeutics, including vaccines, gene therapies and cell therapies.

• For the sickest of sick patients whose lives are immediately at risk, TOH’s critical care unit is a literal lifeline. The critical care unit at the new campus will enhance the comfort level of critically ill patients and their families during some of the most difficult times of their lives.

• The mental health unit at the new campus will create more capacity and access to mental health care and specialty care for patients across Eastern Ontario, with almost double the number of inpatient beds currently available. It will support innovative approaches to enhance mental health care by creating comfortable and therapeutic environments for patients.

• Digital innovation and new technologies will play a major role in a new, state-of-the-art hospital. Leveraging advancements in technology, including AI, to create a more proactive approach to patient care based on data will create a seamless experience between the community and the hospital. This will enhance the capabilities of virtual care for patients at home and keep them connected with loved ones while in hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital is embracing cutting-edge technology as we plan our new campus, which will become one of the most modern and technologically advanced health-care facilities in Canada.

• The Ottawa Hospital is committed to a journey of reconciliation and to ensuring First Nation, Inuit and Métis patients and families access safe health care, free of discrimination. Established in 2021, members of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Circle are guiding TOH’s work of prioritizing initiatives and actions toward reconciliation. This includes providing invaluable insights into the planning and design of the new campus, which will have dedicated spaces for spiritual reflection and Indigenous ceremony.

• With one of the largest renal programs in Canada, TOH has more than 900 patients receiving dialysis treatment. Learn how we're adapting to patient need and planning for the future of renal care with an expanded nephrology unit at the new campus that will increase access to life-sustaining dialysis.

• Sustainable design plans of the new campus aim to improve wellness with spaces that promote health and healing – for the individual and for the environment. Incorporating natural elements such as green roofs and providing access to natural light with unobstructed view of the surrounding landscapes can help reduce stress and improve the quality of life for patients, families and staff.
