Remembrance Day

Every year, November 5 to 11 is Veterans' Week, an opportunity for Canadians to honour the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices of those who served to protect Canada. November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day. The First Nations, Inuit and MĂ©tis people of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country. On November 11, pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. On November 11, from 10:30 am to 11 am a parade will take place in downtown, ending at the Dallas Square Cenotaph (parade route) for the ceremony. For those who cannot attend in person, it will be broadcast on Rogers TV as well as live streamed on YouTube starting at 10:45 am.

The Nanaimo Aquatic Centre pool and gym are open from 1 pm to 5 pm on November 11. All other City offices and recreation facilities are closed.

Nanaimo 150: Did You Know?

On November 11, 1918 at 7 am, horns, whistles, and sirens spread the good news the First World War had ended. Stores closed and horses, cars and other vehicles were decorated for the occasion. A public holiday was proclaimed throughout the province.

The ReWilders

The ReWilders are imaginative, sci-fi inspired creatures designed by local youth in a collaborative public engagement workshop led by artist Robert Turriff. Eleven youth participated in the free workshop where they created unique, small-scale designs inspired by themes of ecology and plant life. The resulting creatures (Chopper and Jeremy) were chosen by participating youth for large-scale fabrication by the artist. The collaborative effort undertaken by the artist in the development of the artwork, represents an intentional process of fostering dialogue, facilitating community involvement and encouraging active engagement and participation by Nanaimo’s youth in the City’s cultural landscape.
