Welcome Back Message from KIN Director, Dr. Robert Boushel

Happy New Year Everyone!

Welcome back to the second term! I hope all of you had a relaxing winter break, with some well-deserved downtime and you are feeling refreshed and ready for a bright term 2 as you embark on your studies in 2021! The academic term will remain very similar to term 1 where courses are online. I hope you will find inspiration in the many positive initiatives underway and continue to creatively support one another.

Your Professors and the School’s Advising Officers are here to provide you with support and to help you meet your goals and academic successes. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

I wish you all success in your studies and continued health as we launch into 2021.

Important Academic & Tuition Deadlines!

Look up your courses in the Course Schedule for important deadlines, such as:

  • Jan. 14th - Tuition and fee deadline
  • Jan. 22th - Last day to drop Term 2 courses without a W standing 
  • Jan. 22th - Last day to elect Credit/D/Fail grading for most eligible Term 2 courses

Join Virtual Collegia Today!
(Undergraduate Students - Y1) 

While your classes might be online, it’s important to make friends and connect with your community at UBC. If you’re not already a member, we encourage all first-year students to register for Virtual Collegia! Through Virtual Collegia, you’ll be paired with a senior peer and a small group of other first-year students – all from your School. You will also be invited to social events where you can meet other students at UBC, attend workshops, and learn about timely UBC resources and services throughout the term.

Want to Learn about Essential Skills to Succeed in Online Learning? The Chapman Learning Commons is here to help!

The Chapman Learning Commons offers workshops and events throughout the year to guide students through their university experience. All current UBC students are welcome to attend! Register to receive the Collaborate Ultra session link ahead of time. Session links will be distributed via email 1-2 days prior to your session. KIN Student Awards Night Ceremony  
(Undergraduate and Graduate Students)

January 21, 2021 | 6:00pm-7:15pm PST

The 2020 Student Awards Ceremony is an annual event that recognizes KIN students who are recipients of scholarships, awards and prizes, and also honours the generous donors and supporters of the School. For information on awards and scholarships available in the School to you, click here.

The Student Awards Night typically takes place in November, but was postponed this year due to the pandemic, and is now taking place on January 21st, 2021 on Zoom. All students who are slated to receive an award should have now received their invitations and RSVPs with the Zoom link. To all our other KIN students, we look forward to receiving your applications for next year's round and to seeing you at the next Student Awards Night Ceremony!

Wade Zhang

Wade is a second-year Kinesiology student. He joined the KIN Mentorship Program to explore the health and sport industry, and to learn from new people.

Kseniya Yakovenko 
UBC Presidential Scholar’s Award Recipient

Kseniya is a first-year Kinesiology student who considers it a huge accomplishment and an honour to have been accepted into the KIN program with a Presidential Scholars Award, as her family immigrated to Canada when she was a child and English is not her first language!

"I chose to apply to the Kinesiology program because it came across as one of the most welcoming, interactive, fun, and innovative programs at UBC. Now, being one semester in, even though school is online, I can confirm that all of those things are true."

The KUS BIPOC Committee - Recipient of the SLC Showcase Award 

Congratulations to the KUS BIPOC Committee for receiving the Student Leadership Conference Showcase Award!

“The committee began this past summer, in hopes of bringing Black students, Indigenous students and students of colour together in Kinesiology.” - Shalom Howe, BIPOC Committee Founder and Coordinator.

The committee has organized events such as the ‘Listening Session’ to hear experiences from BIPOC students and has enacted real change by communicating student feedback to staff and faculty. They have also amplified resources and BIPOC-owned businesses and artists through their website and on Facebook and Instagram

UBC Virtual Student Leadership Conference

The UBC Student Leadership Conference is a one-day conference that takes place annually in January. It’s an opportunity to explore your abilities, connect with other amazing individuals in the UBC community, and acts as a platform to inspire action.

This year, the campus community has come together to allow all UBC students to attend this conference Free of Charge. You will be able to choose from a variety of workshops and speakers that align with your interests and join the virtual conference from wherever you are in the world.

Breathwork Meditation Sessions
(Undergraduate Students - Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4)

  • Thursday, January 14, 2021 | 12:00pm-1:00pm PST 
  • Saturday, January 16, 2021 | 10:00am-11:00am PST

Breathwork is a meditative practice where you take conscious full breaths, breathing in more oxygen and energy into your body, and releasing negative emotions and toxins. 2020 was a challenging year for all of us — this session will help you start fresh. In this time of uncertainty and strain, breathwork can support you in managing your emotional and mental health.

Cost is by donation for students.
