Aviation Safety Capsule: Cannabis and Piloting

Jean Laroche, FRAeS, Director of Research and Development, CQFA

In recent years, co-workers, trainers and medical examiners of aircraft pilots have been concerned about an increase in the use of cannabis among pilots. The phenomenon is often described as a trivialization of cannabis consumption. A current of disinformation seems to influence more young pilots at the beginning of their careers, little aware of the administrative and legal repercussions of the use of cannabis. This text is intended as a factual retrospective of the consequences related to the consumption of cannabis by Canadian pilots.

Renewal of the medical certificate

OVERVIEW

Holders of category 1,2,3 medical certificates that have expired or have expired between March 17, 2020 and March 31, 2021 (inclusive dates), who show no change in health status and who are not subject to none of the limitations listed below, can renew their medical certificate by attestation.

Holders of category 1, 2, 3 medical certificates expired or expiring between March 17, 2020 and March 31, 2021 who have had a change in their state of health or who have one of the limitations listed may benefit from a telemedicine consultation . This remote consultation will determine the suitability to operate in the field of civil aviation or the need for an in-person examination.

Applicants for category 1, 2 and 3 certificates whose certificate expired before March 17, 2020 cannot renew it by attestation; however, and they require a physical examination.

There is no change in the process for Category 4 certificate applicants or for new applicants.

For more information, click HERE  for the Transport Canada website. It describes the procedure to follow and provides you with the appropriate forms.

Engine failure and successful landing

A story and photos by Louis-Philippe Noël

I would like to share with you my experience, my first in-flight emergency: an engine failure with the propeller stopped @ 2200 feet above the river. Maybe it can help other pilots: you learn from the good moves and mistakes of others.

For the context, I have been a young PPL pilot for almost 3 years (night annotation, OTT & 20hrs instruments), I have 325 hours to my credit, mainly done on a Diamond DA40 glass cockpit that I have the privilege of flying regularly . Last May, I had the great opportunity to start flying an ultralight Pipistrel Virus SW, glass cockpit with excellent performance thanks to its light weight and its Rotax 912iS engine. It was with this device that the emergency occurred.
