In the April 2024 issue...

Welcome to the Spring edition of the Academic Integrity Digest. It has been approximately one year since our inaugural issue was published. At that time, there was much discussion around the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies like ChatGPT. These conversations have expanded over the past year as the tools, capabilities and adoption of GenAI technologies have moved the conversation into various areas of the university including academic integrity, teaching and learning and equity.

This issue of the Academic Integrity Digest revisits the GenAI topic, identifying initiatives that UBC has taken over the last year while also providing a roadmap for resources currently available as well as those anticipated. The Editorial for this issue is contributed by the three Co-chairs of the Generative AI Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee which is a sub-committee of the broader Generative AI Steering Committee. Comprised of a broad range of functional and academic leaders from across UBC and drawing upon experts in the field of GenAI and educational technology, this group seeks to consider the implications for UBC through a student, staff and faculty lens, both evaluating the opportunities that come with generative AI while considering its risks and limitations.

Editorial

The evolution of generative AI in teaching and learning at UBC

Written by Christina Hendricks, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning pro tem, UBC Vancouver; Tamara Ebl, Lecturer, Faculty of Management, UBC Okanagan; and Kamil Kanji, Elected Student Senator-at-Large and Vice Chair of the UBC Vancouver Senate.

In the fall of 2023, UBC created the Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee, with a wide membership across both campuses, and the three of us as co-chairs. Given questions and concerns about generative AI and academic integrity within UBC community, academic integrity quickly became one of the prominent discussion topics in the group, though many others have emerged as well.

The Advisory Committee focuses on benefits, challenges, and risks of using GenAI tools in teaching and learning activities, including in the areas of academic integrity, Indigenous data sovereignty, equity and inclusivity, accessibility, privacy, and intellectual property. The Advisory Committee has met monthly since October 2023 and will continue until June 2024.

One of the Advisory Committee’s main objectives is to develop a set of principles and guidelines for students, faculty, teaching assistants and staff use of GenAI tools in teaching and learning. These guidelines are meant to provide more specific direction within a broader set of principles on GenAI produced through the UBC Generative AI Steering Committee.

Generative AI is changing the way we think about education–it brings exciting possibilities, and poses new challenges. But as we turn our attention to technology, remembering the people at the heart of our mission becomes increasingly vital.

At the 2024 Celebrate Learning Week, we will explore how to retain our focus on the human aspects of education, while absorbing and exploring this new technological landscape.
