As we dive into the sunny months of July and August, it's time to make the most of our beautiful surroundings and vibrant community. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, King Township offers a plethora of activities and events to fill your summer with excitement. From engaging summer camps and diverse recreation programs to scenic parks and delightful dining experiences, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Summer camps: fun for the young ones Our countdown to summer is over, but it's not too late to secure a spot in one of our fantastic summer camps. Running through to Friday, August 30, we offer over 40 camps for children aged four to 13. These one-week session camps cover a wide range of interests, including arts and culture, sports, science and technology, and the great outdoors. Summer recreation programs and drop-in activities This summer, we invite residents of all ages to explore our extensive recreation programs starting today. Secure your spot in an outdoor education program at the scenic Cold Creek Conservation Area, featuring archery, climbing, disc golf, low ropes, and Nordic Pole walking, or learn to play one of the fastest-growing sports in the country: pickleball, with programs for adults beginning July 8 at the Nobleton Community Centre & Arena and the Trisan Centre. If you prefer a more flexible schedule, take advantage of our drop-in sports programming, including badminton, basketball, pickleball, and volleyball at various locations. Parents: no need to panic, there are still (some) camps available. Limited spots are still available in select camps, ranging from classics like Summer Shine to specialized areas of interest such as hockey, soccer, music video production, dance, skateboarding/scooter and multi-media art. Every Thursday, starting July 4 from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. enjoy a low-impact class, designed for the wellness of mind and body. Poses are practiced to improve strength, balance, flexibility, mobility and alignment. This class is included with your Unlimited Trisan Fitness membership. Not a member? For more information, visit king.ca/parks. | Construction and installation of a new splash pad at Salamander Park is underway! In April, King City residents living in the immediate neighbourhood surrounding Salamander Park were invited to participate in a one-question survey to help determine the best new amenity to add to the park. Three options were available: a splash pad, a play structure or a ball hockey rink. 57% of survey respondents said the splash pad was their most preferred addition. Expected completion is end of August 2024. The splash pad may open for the remainder of the season, pending timing of completion. Check availability and complete the facility rental application form online at king.ca/bookafacility. | Laskay Hall reopens for bookings after repairs Emergency repairs on Laskay Hall, required to fix sagging ceiling joints, are now complete. The historic building has reopened to the public and is available to rent for celebrations, workshops and meetings. To book Laskay Hall, visit king.ca/bookafacility. | Practice off-road vehicle safety The use of off-road vehicles on any roads and parks within King Township is strictly prohibited. This includes pocket bikes, dirt bikes, mini-bikes, ATVs and motorized scooters, which are not allowed on public roadways or sidewalks. The vehicle may be impounded, and fines can reach up to $5,000. Reports of ATVs being ridden on public roads should be made to the York Regional Police using the online Road Watch portal at yrp.ca. Read more about this achievement at king.ca/news. | e-Waste event happens on July 27 Do you have old electronics collecting dust at home? Properly dispose of your e-waste for FREE at the Community Electronic Recycling event, held at the King Heritage and Cultural Centre (parking lot) on Saturday, July 27 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your unwanted electronics (e.g., TVs, computers, cameras) to ensure they are disposed of safely, recycled and kept out of landfill. For details, visit king.ca/electronicrecycling. | King encourages responsible pet ownership Having a pet as part of your family is rewarding, but it comes with many responsibilities – including keeping them on a leash and cleaning up after them when you are out for a walk. It’s the responsibility of every pet owner to keep their pet (and neighbours) safe by abiding by the rules found in King Township’s Animal Control Bylaw #2016-85. The fine for having a dog off leash anywhere outside of an off-leash dog park is $360. The fine for not picking up after your pet is $200. Learn more at king.ca/news. | Curbside giveaway day happening on July 27 Saturday, July 27 is a Curbside Giveaway Day. King Township residents are invited to place unwanted items, labelled FREE, at the curb for other residents and community members to browse and take for their own use, free of charge. Starting at 7a.m. take any unwanted items to the curb, marked "Free", for others to pick up and take to a good home. Remove all leftover items by 5p.m. on that day, to help keep King Township clean. For more information, visit king.ca/curbsidegiveaway. | 2024 final tax notice Please be advised that the 2024 final property tax notices were mailed out Tuesday, June 25 with installment due dates of July 24, 2024 and September 25, 2024. Payments can be made by Pre-Authorized Debit options, online services or mail. Residents can sign up for a Pre-Authorized Debit Program to have their payments spread over 10 months or automatically withdrawn on the scheduled due dates. The King Heritage and Cultural Centre is buzzing with excitement this summer in celebration of King Township’s designation as a Bee City! Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to partake in this commemorative community art installation, piece by piece. Seriously: we're painting and assembling a large bee puzzle! Drop by the King Heritage & Cultural Centre Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. now through August to design and paint your piece of the bee puzzle. Once we have painted all 250 puzzle pieces, we will assemble it to create a giant bee and install it in a public space in King! Pre-registration not required. Cost: $5. Space is limited. | King Chamber of Commerce launches King Proud merchandise store and the Morning Youth Grant The King Chamber of Commerce has officially launched the King Proud merchandise store and opened applications for the Morning Youth Grant. The Morning Youth Grant is an initiative inspired by the legacy of the late James Morning and his unwavering spirit for entrepreneurship in his home community of King Township. Founded by Brent Morning in honour of his father’s dedication, and in partnership with the King Chamber of Commerce, this grant is a tribute to the past and a beacon of hope for the future. James Morning was an esteemed figure in the community who served on the Town Council for two decades and embodied the true essence of entrepreneurship. From humble beginnings in 1969, he tirelessly built his company, James Morning & Sons Ltd, into a thriving business.
