Apply for Graduation and Grad Pictures!

Are you a BMS student who will be graduating in May 2020?

Apply for graduation on your SSC by February 28, 2020, and sign-up to take your graduation photos in the link below - photos will be taken from January 10, 2020 to March 30, 2020.

To celebrate your achievements, we will also be holding a special BMS Graduation Reception! Invitations will go out in early February, and a maximum of 2 guests are welcome to join you.

Cinema and the City: Film and Urban Iran in the Early 20th Century (in English).
Fri., Jan. 17, 2020, 6pm - 9pm @ Asian Studies Auditorium

The focus on the later periods of Iranian cinema history has led to a disregard of cinematic activities in the earlier periods. Exploring the early twentieth century, this talk examines the role of cinema in Iranian modernity and in the urbanization of Tehran from the 1900s to 1930s. More event details and RSVP below.

Public Humanities Hub Media Workshop Series: Trade Books.
Tues., Jan. 21, 2020, 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Room 323, Buchanan Tower

Literary agent John Pearce and Peter A. Allard School of Law professor Dr. Joel Bakan will address the topic of “How to Write a Trade Book."

Discussions include the challenges and joys of writing trade books, and advice for academics considering this path. RSVP below.

This 2 hour workshop will include topics about building succesful social media campaigns, types of content, how to post, and create advertisements for soical media tools and Facebook.

Call for Volunteer Production Assistant and Stills Photographer!

A Film Production student is looking for a volunteer Production Assistant and Stills Photographer, ideally with some experience and a camera, to join on a shoot for a short film, The Tailor!

Shooting will take place in East Van and Chinatown on January 18th & 19th. If you're interested, contact The Tailor producer Andy Alvarez below.

Designing Art for Cultural Inclusion 

Calling all people interested in inclusive art or who would like to learn how to break down stereotypes, myths, and misconceptions about ethnicity, immigration, race, religion, and culture through art.

This event is part of a city-wide campaign on racial diversity and immigration led by the Burnaby Family Life. Attendees will have the opportunity to form teams to design a poster for the campaign, with a chance to win $500 and other goodies!

6th Annual Emerge Media Awards

The Emerge Media Awards, sponsored and hosted by the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto, celebrates and showcases the achievements of Canadian postsecondary students in journalism, photography, graphic design and communications.

They are seeking to recognize the best writing, editing, videography, audio, graphic design, communications and public relations work done at universities! More details linked below.

JRNL 420: Decoding Social Media  

After collaborting with the UBC School of Journalism, the BMS is pleased to announced the release of JRNL 420: Decoding Social Media, a cross-listed section of JRNL 520, a popular graduate level course for BMS students. 

Any Year 4 BMS students interested in registering for JRNL 420 can email arts.mediastudies@ubc.ca expressing their interest. There are still a few spots available!

If you would like to have Go Global transfer credits considered to fulfill the Core Plus requirement, they must be submitted before your exchange term. Any courses submitted after an exchange term will not be considered to fulfill the Core Plus requirement.
