Film Night: Carmen

Thursday, March 2, 2023 | 6:00 pm

Drop in for a movie in the Annex! In March, we'll be showing Carmen (2022), written and directed by Valerie Buhagiar.

Drop in, no registration required. Come a little early and grab a comfy chair—film starts promptly at 6 pm, and runs 87 minutes. Rated PG (Ontario).

Carmen is a charming story, inspired by true events, set in a village in Malta. Carmen has looked after her brother, the priest at the local church, since she was sixteen years old. Now almost fifty, she is suddenly left to start a new life. Facing her past, Carmen brings colour to the lives of the villagers in this compelling story about a woman finding her voice.

Carmen won Best Film at the Canadian Film Festival in Toronto.

Best Wishes to Christine Miller

After four decades of involvement with the Bowen Island Public Library, Christine Miller is leaving her position here as of February 12 and starting a well-earned retirement. Christine has been at the library, most recently, since 2006 as a Library Supervisor working weekends and overseeing much of our adult fiction collections. Prior to her current position, Christine ran the Bowen Library three separate times in the 1980’s and 1990’s and has also served on the Bowen Library Board.

In and among all those activities Christine managed to operate her own businesses, Evergreen Books and Evergreen Acres, and work part time at West Vancouver Memorial Library. Upon her first “retirement” from West Vancouver Library in 2006, Christine immediately came back to Bowen Library bringing a wealth of expertise and experience. She provided excellent customer service, and created displays and booklists to share the best features of the adult fiction and mystery collections that she carefully curated.

We wish Christine lots of time for reading and relaxing in her retirement, though I suspect she will find new ventures that will keep her busy. We will miss Christine’s contributions to the library but even more so, her easy-going nature, subtle dry wit and her indispensable contribution to the library team. All the best for your future adventures Christine.

With best wishes from all the library team.

#ThrowbackValentine'sDay

Many Valentine's Days ago, library staff and patrons arrived to find the library front doors and windows covered in hearts! We never did find out who was spreading the love that day, but it sure put smiles on our faces.

From the library, wishing you a happy February, a chilly month made warmer by the hearts around us!

Christine's Favourite Books at the Bowen Library

From Christine:

"Here are some of my favourite authors with books in the Bowen library. You will not find anything academic or of great literary merit here I'm afraid—my days of such reading are long gone and now I just go for the soft option!

As you will see I read for relaxation and escapism in books with interesting characters, usually set in attractive surroundings and often involving animals. Even the mysteries I enjoy are rarely "noir" and again the settings and personalities are the attraction rather than the crime."
