Quilts for Brazil are needed!!

The province of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, is made up of 497 cities, and recently, storms have wreaked havoc on over 425 of these cities. The devastation has included landslides, destroyed roads, collapsed bridges, power outages and water cuts. Millions of people are currently without access to basic necessities such as drinking water and food as reported by Brazil's civil defence agency this week.

Fibre artist Ana Paula Brasil from Thunder Bay, Ontario, has taken the initiative to provide quilts to the survivors. Over 2 million people are homeless, and quilts will not only provide physical warmth but also serve as a symbol of solidarity, compassion, love and support from across the globe. Ana put together a campaign to collect and send 2000 quilts, and is partnering with Vine Church to coordinate the logistics of getting the quilts from Canada to Brazil.

The quilts will be heading to Brazil on August 1st so there's time to create one if you don’t have an extra in your stash that you would like to contribute. All sizes are needed.

Quilts should be sent to:

Ana Paula Brasil
136 Frederica St. West, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada  P7E 3V7

Quilter’s Dream

Don’t miss our May meeting—VMQG member, Lorna Shapiro from Quilter’s Dream Fabrics will be giving a talk AND hosting a special VMQG Pop Up Shop.

I started my quilting and design journey about 15 years ago when I retired from a very left-brain career. Looking for a joyful activity, I tried making a quilt for our about-to-be-30-year-old daughter and her husband. I was instantly passionate about quilting and about blending a Japanese aesthetic with a contemporary sense of design. Over the intervening years, I have been continually refining my design aesthetic. The Pacific West Coast, where I live and work, offers me daily inspiration through its shapes, textures, and natural colours found here.

This will be a special treat to learn about Art Gallery Fabrics and shop curated bundles of fabric. Bonus: VMQG members get a 20% pop up shop discount!
