NEWSLETTER

A WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As the fall season begins, with the cold weather inevitably on the way to compound issues in our communities, this newsletter is dedicated to our members for all the work they have accomplished last year, knowing that our work is never done. Thank you for your tireless efforts. Watch this video to find out the scope of your work.

We also feature a call to action for all Vincentians and allies to support the National Housing Accord, a strong and evidence-based proposal which we believe will improve the housing situation in our communities. Happy reading.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Help to create more affordable housing now!

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul National Council has recently partnered with the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH). For almost a decade CAEH has been a strong voice for advocacy and action around preventing and ending homelessness in Canada. Our partnership with them provides several platforms for SSVP to be aligned with our shared objectives and for Vincentians to play an active role to eradicate homelessness and serve our neighbours in need in new and meaningful ways!

Your SSVP National Housing Committee invites you to:

  • Learn about the new National Housing Accord! A non-partisan blueprint for our federal government to create 2 million affordable and market-rent homes by 2030!

  • Decide if you support the 10 recommendations of the Accord and the immediate impact it will have on affordable housing supply across our country.
  • Take action! Let your elected officials know that you support the National Housing Accord by clicking here. Let your opposition party leaders know that you support the Accord by clicking here!

Thank you for your consideration of the above. Your National Housing Committee welcomes your feedback and involvement. Please contact us at housing-logement@ssvp.ca

TWINNING

The Society’s main humanitarian aid program for developing countries is Twinning. The Council General International (CGI), through the International Twinning Commission, has given Canada responsibility for 21 countries. It is a fundamental mission of the Society that we must strive to fulfill in order to come to the aid of the poorest in this world.

Canada now has 195 active twinning thanks to the commitment and generosity of councils and conferences across the country. However, much remains to be done to better fulfill this mission. Here is a list of twinning requests awaiting Canadian donor twins.

If your Conference or Council would like to be twinned, please complete the Twinning Application form and return it to twinning-chair@ssvp.ca.

SPIRITUALITY

HOLY SPIRIT’S PRESENCE

When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father, he said to the disciples: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16.12-13)

In his Daily TV mass homily on May 17, 2023, Fr. Mark Miller, CSsR spoke: We would love to have Jesus bodily present in our midst. And yet, when you stop and think of it, what we learn is how God comes to us in the midst of our humanity. And so when God comes to us today, in the spirit of Jesus, it is the Spirit that is given to all those who are baptized into Christ.
