The deadline for Award Nomination & Abstract Submission is Friday April 1st , 2022 at 5pm. Presenting at PATH Day is a requirement for first year graduate students.
Effective Mentorship of Racialized Graduate Students
Inspired by an Op-Ed by graduate student, Dwayne Tucker , this initiative focuses on the complexities and gaps in the mentorship of racialized students at UBC by calling on a constellation of graduate students, mentors and experts. The purpose is to highlight effective mentorship to amplify the value of ethnic/racial diversity at the core of graduate education excellence. A survey and focus groups on the experiences of racialized students is being conducted.

Free Statistical Software
As a member of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine you are invited to use the statistical software JMPPro v16 from SAS institute. This software is made available for academic purposes only and is licensed annually. For more information on the capabilities of JMP, please see the website www.jmp.com . Interested parties must contact Steve Kalloger at kalloger@mail.ubc.ca to acquire the software.
Global Travel Advisory
As of December 15, the Canadian Government has reintroduced a global travel advisory warning against non-essential travel due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. With this update, UBC has made the decision to pause university travel outside of Canada for students while the global travel advisory is in place. This includes travel for co-op work terms, conferences and programs by OVPI Go Global like exchange and study abroad.
Per UBC's Student Safety Abroad Policy , any student planning academic travel to destinations with travel advisories of “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” requires an exemption through the high-risk travel protocol managed by our Student Safety Abroad team. Our Safety Abroad team will continue to support graduate students with academically necessary research outside of Canada that can no longer be delayed to apply for exemption. Our Student Safety Abroad Manager reviews each application before forwarding it to a designated department head for final approval.

Invitation to Black graduate students to provide input on a Postdoctoral & Doctoral Completion Fellowship Program
In alignment with UBC’s institutional commitments to the development of a more just, equitable, diverse and inclusive academic and research environment, UBC is taking action to improve the recruitment and support of outstanding Black scholars.
One dimension of this effort is the potential development of new doctoral completion and postdoctoral fellowship programs to provide enhanced opportunity and support for emerging Black scholars to advance their preparation for successful academic careers.
The envisioned doctoral completion fellowship would provide financial and mentorship support to final-year Black doctoral students to help them strengthen their academic profile for the academic job market.
The envisioned postdoctoral fellowship would provide salary and research funding, access to teaching opportunities, career development, and academic networking for cohorts of Black postdoctoral fellows across any academic discipline.
Current UBC-V Black doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to join an upcoming conversation to help shape the possibilities of this new program. This feedback is crucial in helping to design programs that can address needs and provide opportunities to emerging Black scholars.
An online survey version of this consultation is also available here. You are welcome to provide feedback using the survey, and/or register to attend a remote engagement session.

Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF)
The 2022 Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) will take place during the week of June 13 – 17 (TBA if virtual or in-person). This forum is a valuable opportunity for health research trainees in all fields at the doctoral level (PhD and MD/PhD) from across Canada to present their work, to network and to be recognized for the excellence of their contributions. The forum will feature a judged oral (research poster) presentation, awards of excellence and opportunities for students to network around their research posters. A notable highlight will be the participation of Gairdner laureates, both as symposium speakers and for small group mentorship interactions with student participants.
CSHRF has secured support and resources to provide students who attend with complimentary registration to the Forum. Registration includes the (judged) oral poster presentation, National awards of excellence, access to the Career Development Workshop, Gairdner Symposium and small-group Gairdner mentorship sessions as well as the opportunity for students to network virtually.
UBC graduate programs in the health sciences are invited to nominate their top (5%) currently-enrolled PhD students to participate in this event. If you are a PhD Student who would like to be considered for nomination please send your expression of interest to Heather Cheadle at heather.cheadle@pathology.ubc.ca by Monday, February 28th, 2022.

PALM Trainee Virtual Conference Attendance Awards 2022 - Call for cycle 1 Apps
Due to COVID, these awards have been temporarily revised to reimburse students for virtual conferences where a registration fee was paid. The applications for cycle 1 (January - June, 2022) are due by e-mail to heather.cheadle@pathology.ubc.ca by Friday, April 1, 2022 at 4:00PM.
Eligibility:
The competition is open to Pathology graduate students irrespective of citizenship or residency status in Canada who are registered in the PhD Program, and are in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th year of their program.
The conference must be identified as an international conference, but it may take place in Canada.
If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact Heather Cheadle for clarification.

1) Completed PALM Trainee Virtual Conference Awards Application found here
2) Submitted Conference Abstract.
3) Latest Annual Report.
4) Evidence of Abstract acceptance at Conference for Poster/Podium Presentation.
Reimbursement of this award will occur by funds transfer from G+PS Graduate Awards.
Applications will be adjudicated by a Departmental Awards Committee, and the results of this competition will be announced in July 2022.
