Monthly e-news for KIN students

Dear Members of the Kinesiology Student Body,

As the semester draws to an end, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your strength, resilience and patience in the face of all the adjustments to university life. It has not been easy. Yet, it is also remarkable to witness how in the face of adversity, our school community has faced the many challenges in a positive spirit of collaboration and continues to strive forward.

Many valuable student initiatives were established this past term, and our KIN student body is leading the way. One such initiative is the KUS BIPOC Committee. Together, 4th-year student and founder/coordinator Shalom Howe worked with KUS President Keira Britto to identify areas of representation and support the committee could provide BIPOC students. The committee aims to create an inclusive environment for Black, Indigenous, and Students of Colour in the KUS and advocates for the interests of BIPOC students in Kinesiology.

Another great student service is Campus KINnections, established by Grant Phillips-Hing. The team was able to pivot quickly in March to offer services online. In a year where social isolation and uncertainty were ever-present, they included more coordinator roles to further establish the program culture and increase communication and support for the peer mentors. They also received a record number of student mentee applications. The program has been highly effective for building community for students, particularly in a year where it is difficult to meet friends in an online class environment.

Our Jump Start Orientation Transition Leaders are now serving in Virtual Collegia which was established to help first-year students find community support during COVID. We currently have 119 first-year students participating in Virtual Collegia, who are being supported by 8 of our KIN Orientation and Transition Leaders. These leaders continue to build a community, provide support and connect students to resources, as well as host a variety of different events.

Congratulations to all of these students, and to each of you who is helping to create and support community. Your work is being recognized and is inspiring. Thank you!

Finally, on behalf of the faculty and staff in the School of Kinesiology, I wish you success in your exams and the Happiest of Holidays. I hope that you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday season full of healthy activities and connections. I look forward to the new year, recharged and ready to go!

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS

UBC Fall 2020 Convocation Wrap-Up!
(Graduate and Undergraduate Students - Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4)

At the Virtual Fall 2020 Convocation ceremony on November 25th, the School of Kinesiology celebrated 69 graduating (38 undergraduate and 31 graduate) students who came to UBC from across the globe. Although an in-person ceremony was missed, the School community held an intimate and happy reception on Zoom for its new graduates and loved ones, who tuned in from many countries to wish them well and to welcome them into the alumni fold.

We're proud to say that BKin graduate, Christine Pang was one of only two students selected to speak at the UBC Convocation where she also announced the Class of 2020 legacy gift to the university. We invite you to read excerpts from Christine's speech below and view a recording of the virtual convocation here. To provide you with a taste of the Kin grad reception read the message imparted by Ph.D. graduate, Robyn Mildren whose words inspire hope for a society undergoing a pandemic, and relay the valuable impacts of kinesiology graduates.

Many thanks go out to those who spoke so eloquently at the reception: KUS president, Kiera Britto; Alumnus and graduate student, Alyssa Reyes; professors Robert Boushel and Andrea Bundon; and to KIN student engagement officer, Elise Le Brun who hosted the evening.

We invite you to take a look at some of the virtual offerings the School produced in honour of our grads
here and to view the list of our most recent KIN alumni here

Flavours from the UBC Fall Graduation
(Graduate and Undergraduate Students - Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4)

Christine Pang (BKin 20), Undergraduate Speech

Christine is currently serving as a Kin sociocultural research assistant and personal trainer. Her goal is to pursue a Master of Physical Therapy.

Here is an excerpt from Christine's speech

"...You will only be content when you start doing things to fulfill yourself rather than your resume. For me, it meant quitting 2 jobs to become a research assistant and do a directed studies project. Was this what I expected, no! But it opened up new avenues for me and brought out potential in me that I didn’t even know I had.

Whatever your next step is, don’t compare your journey to the person next to you, expect greatness from within yourself and you will exceed your own expectations..."

Robyn Mildren (Ph.D. 20) Graduate Speech

Robyn graduated with a Ph.D. in neuromechanics. Her thesis examined the leg muscle reflexes involved in the control of balance, and how they change with ageing and after suffering a stroke. She has gone on to do post-doctoral work at John Hopkins University. Robyn is an elite long-distance runner.

"Greetings...my name is Robyn Mildren and I am addressing you on behalf of the cohort of grad students who are graduating alongside me today in UBC’s School of Kinesiology. I first want to speak directly to the master’s and doctoral students graduating today and give them their own special moment to take a breath and reflect on this accomplishment. I’m going to try my best to put into words why I think what you have done is special..."
