COBC Standards of Practice

Introducing Standard 4
Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-Racism

Standard 4 is in effect as of September 30, 2022. It solidifies anti-racism as a pillar of every BC optician's practice.

This standard describes how each optician must engage in an ongoing examination of their values, assumptions, beliefs, and privileges, and how they must seek to continually improve upon their ability to provide culturally safe care for Indigenous clients.

Standard 4 is foundational to all other standards. Opticians should endeavour to incorporate Indigenous cultural safety, cultural humility, and anti-racism not only into their client interactions but into all aspects of their opticianry work.

Working on your CCP? Remember that reading and implementing the new Standards of Practice is your professional responsibility—but it can also be used towards your learning goals! There are countless ways to incorporate Indigenous cultural safety, cultural humility, and anti-racism into your practice. If you need some inspiration, you might wish to use COBC's Cultural Safety & Humility resource page as a starting point.

Allied Health Professionals Day

Since 2018, October 14 has been celebrated as International Allied Health Professionals Day, recognizing the significant impacts and contributions of the collective allied health workforce around the world. In BC, this workforce includes approximately 75,000 individuals in more than 70 disciplines—including opticianry.

The Allied Health Policy Secretariat (AHPS) is in the process of developing a three-year strategic plan, which will set the mission, vision, philosophy, and direction of the allied health workforce in BC. A key component of the AHPS plan is increasing awareness and recognition of the allied health workforce.

Do you know whose land you live on?

When Lisa Bannerman joined COBC as Registrar/Executive Director in 2018, she relocated from the Treaty 7 territory of the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut'ina Nations — lands to which she still feels a deep, personal connection — to the traditional and unceded territories of the scəw̓aθən (Tsawwassen), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and other Coast Salish Peoples. She now lives and works on the traditional and unceded territory of the Okanagan syilx people.

College of Opticians of BC operates on the traditional, ancestral and unceded Coast Salish territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
