Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Acquires Bombardier’s Canadair Regional Aircraft (CRJ) Program

Aéro Montréal welcomes the news with optimism

The announcement of the acquisition of the CRJ aircraft program by MHI on June 25 is an interesting/exciting opportunity for Québec’s aerospace cluster. After having attracted Airbus to our ecosystem last year, Mitsubishi is the sixth OEM to come to Greater Montréal. This development opens the door to our companies in the Asian market, which is a rapidly growing market in aerospace.

Regarding the employees who will be directly affected by the layoffs following the discontinuation of the assembly of the CRJ in Mirabel, at the end of 2020, they are people with considerable technical knowledge. These highly qualified employees will have the opportunity to be recruited for the growing Airbus A220 program, as well as by the 200 companies in Québec’s aerospace cluster.

AI and the transportation industry

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are starting to transform how solutions are built and deployed in transportation. In fact, transportation is arguably yielding some of the most ambitious, far reaching enterprise applications of AI and ML. Fully automated transportation technologies such as autonomous vehicles and self-driving sea vessels capture the public’s imagination; but these technologies require further development and will likely involve safety regulation before widespread adoption.
