VOLUME 13 No. 1 | JANUARY 9, 2023

PROVINCIAL CONTRACT TALKS
2023 negotiations | Front commun visuals

As a new year begins, it’s a good time to spread the word about what the Front commun is fighting for. The visuals available on our Facebook page should come in handy. Speaking with one voice for 420,000 workers, the Front commun is demanding:

  • better conditions of work and practice, and better pay
  • a general catch-up increase for all employees
  • permanent protection against inflation.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
Compensation for employees with weakened immune systems

As of January 1, 2023, immunocompromised employees who have not been reassigned since the ministerial orders pertaining to the public health emergency were lifted can no longer receive compensation. If you’re facing this situation, contact the union counsellor at your institution to discuss your options.

THE APTS IN THE MEDIA
Privatized health care has no place in Québec

The government is at it again: two private hospitals will be set up, supposedly in order to relieve overcrowding in emergency rooms. This unilateral decision is a fundamental breach of the principles that shaped the creation of Québec’s public health and social service system, and the Coalition Main Rouge, to which the APTS belongs, is adamantly opposed to it. “The claim that the private sector will do better is not just a fallacy,” say the authors of an open letter published in Le Soleil. “It’s also an insult to people working under intense pressure in the public system. Give them the resources, make sure the system covers all the bases, make sure it’s decentralized, and let people on the ground talk to each other so that they can organize their work and the care and services they provide. If that happens, there’s no reason the public system can’t do better than the private sector.” Definitely worth reading!

UNION LIFE
CALL FOR CANDIDATES | Provincial mobilization committee

Want to help forge a strong culture of mobilization in the APTS? At the next General Council meeting on January 24-26, we’ll be electing four people to the provincial mobilization committee, which is responsible, among other things, for contributing to developing and updating the annual APTS mobilization action plan in cooperation with the union organizing sector. If you’re interested in getting involved, you have until January 13 to submit your candidacy. For more information on the make-up of the committee and the application process, see the web page devoted to the upcoming election.
