Nanaimo 150: Did you know?

The City of Nanaimo Westwood Farm and swampland were purchased by the Canadian Western Fuel and Electric Company in 1907. The Canadian Western Fuel and Electric Company then constructed a dam in the early 1900s.The resulting reservoir is now called Westwood Lake (named after the Westwood Family who homesteaded the area). At that time, the lake provided a reserve water supply for Nanaimo’s Millstream River electric power station. Westwood Lake and its forested surroundings were officially designated a park on January 27, 1957.

Fire Prevention Week

We are participating in Fire Prevention Week from October 6-12, 2024. This year's campaign is "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!". Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month by pushing the test button.

Some safety tips to keep you and your family safe:

  • Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.
  • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.
  • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.
  • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms and these alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop working when you press the test alarm.
