lySeptember 2022 Edition

We're Back!

After a quiet summer, we're thrilled to have the sound of eager new and returning students in our hallways again.

Before the start of the semester, our new students were invited to take part in the JumpStart program, on campus. This In-person programming was designed to enhance new students’ transition to the College through a variety of student success sessions and student panels. The in-person JumpStart program took place on September 1 - but have no fear, if students missed out they can still take part in the online version available for all students, all campuses, at any time of the year.

Returning students looking for a refresher on how to achieve their goals and to find out what their next steps are, were able to take part in a Tune Up on September 2.This event also includes student success sessions and wraps up with a Student Information Expo, an opportunity to connect with service providers from many areas of the College.

September 6 was the big day - Welcome Day. In addition to providing important information to students about their individual programs, our Student Life team put together a variety of events to celebrate before the start of classes on September 7.

Program Spotlight:  Electrician

Electricians are in high demand.

Electricians perform a variety of tasks on the electrical systems of buildings and other structures, including preparing, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing wiring, fixtures, control devices, and related equipment. It is important that they are up-to-date on building codes and in touch with developing electrical technologies.

We offer two ways to get started on your Electrician education:

  • Take our 24-week Foundation program (next intake February 2024) and gain the experience and knowledge about the trade you need to find an employer to sponsor you for your apprenticeship training. Even high school students may be eligible for this program through the Youth Train in Trades program.

  • If you have an employer sponsor, you can take our Apprenticeship program. We offer all three levels of Electrician Common Core technical training as well as Electrician, Construction Level 4 and Electrician, Industrial Level 4. The next intake for Level 1 of the Apprenticeship program in in January 2024.

Why choose a career as an electrician?

  • There is expected to be more than 3,700 job openings for construction/maintenance electricians by 2031. The current median wage in BC for construction/maintenance electricians is $58,397.

  • There is expected to be close to 1,300 job openings for industrial electricians by 2031. The current median wage in BC for industrial electricians is $82,381.

  • Work performed by electricians is expanding to include alternative energy supplies, such as solar power, wind power and fuel cells, wiring for smart homes, and automated systems for high-tech industries and complex computer offices. Electricians who specialize in new technologies are expected to be in demand
