April 2024

Mayor's Message

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

On behalf of King Township Council, welcome to the April edition of the King Bulletin.

In our largely rural setting, where our green landscapes are cherished, spring signifies a call to action. I urge you to join in preserving our natural beauty and nurturing a vibrant community spirit by getting involved in any of the Township's spring-cleaning initiatives.

Green Yards Program

Get involved in King's Clean Yards program to support pollinators and green your yard. Starting soon, you can purchase native wildflower kits, rain barrels or backyard composters at a low cost. Visit king.ca/greenyardsprogram for updates on when the 2024 supplies will be available.

Yard Waste Collection

As we tidy up our yards after winter, leaf and yard waste collection begins the second week of April. Remember to use Kraft paper bags or marked garbage containers labeled "Yard Waste," with a maximum weight of 22 kg (50 lbs.) per container/bundle. Yard waste in improper containers will not be collected, and please note that we do not accept grass clippings. Check out our newly designed 2024 waste calendar for more information.

King Community Clean-Up Day

Join us in celebrating Earth Week at the annual King Community Clean-Up on Saturday, April 20. Help keep our parks, streets, and neighborhoods clean and green by registering your clean-up location at townshipofking.perfectmind. Can't find a location? Join us at Tasca Park in Nobleton, Memorial Park in King City or Dufferin Marsh in Schomberg from 10 - 11:30 a.m. to clean up a community park. Full details can be found at king.ca/communitycleanup.

Street Sweeping

As winter fades away, it leaves behind salt, sand, and debris on our roads. The Township's street sweeping program aims to remove these remnants, ensuring storm sewers remain unclogged and roads safe for everyone. Scheduled to begin in mid to late spring and typically completed by the season's end, the program's timing may vary due to weather conditions. Residents are advised not to park on residential streets during sweeping operations to assist in the process, which starts in the main villages and extends to rural areas.

Please continue to volunteer, shop locally as much as you can and visit king.ca for the latest news on all things King.

Sincerely,

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

TWRC

King's Township-Wide Recreation Centre is in the news

King’s Township-Wide Recreation Centre (TWRC) continues making headlines. Mayor Steve Pellegrini recently sat down with reporter Lana Hall from Novae Res Urbis, a municipal and planning publication, to discuss how the TWRC recently became the first such structure in Canada to achieve the Canada Green Building Council’s (CAGBC) Zero Carbon Building Design Certification.

This certification is awarded for new constructions which demonstrate climate leadership through innovative carbon reduction strategies and optimal building performance.

Slated to open in the fall of 2024, the multi-use recreation centre is located on 25 acres at the southeast corner of the King Campus of Seneca and will be accessible from 15th Sideroad. The facility will include an aquatics centre with a six-lane lap pool and leisure pool, two NHL-sized ice rinks, spectator seating, an artificial turf fieldhouse with running track, and a multi-use community space.

Mark Hutchinson, CAGBC vice president of green building programs and innovation, is quoted in the NRU article as saying, “A good design team will make sure that they’re maximizing the efficiency of the system that pulls the heat out of the equipment that’s generating ice and provides it to other places in the building … [In the Township-Wide facility], it’s used in something like half a dozen different places, everything from the Zamboni water to the pool heating, to snow melting.”

Mayor Pellegrini said the Township’s recent implementation of Green Development Standards provide a framework for advancing sustainability in new developments throughout the Township to show both the development community and residents that King’s local government is serious about sustainable design too.

“This was just an opportunity to actually walk the talk,” Pellegrini told NRU. “We [created the standards] in partnership with the development community, and they actually adhere to them, and they work with us to make their developments sustainable. So if they’re doing it, we’d better be the leaders of it.”

King farm rules

King Township strengthens farming integrity:

new rules ensure farmland preservation

To protect King’s farmland and heritage, the Township has changed the rules for applying to build farm structures. Now, anyone applying to build a farm structure must include their farm business registration number and an active membership card. There are currently over 41,000 acres of agricultural production in the Township and 239 farms benefitting from King's fertile soil.

This change is to make sure that farms in King Township are only used for farming. All farms in Ontario that make $7,000 or more each year must register their farm business with Agricorp, which is required by law.

Pottageville Mosquito program

Pottageville mosquito program

Much of Pottageville is located within a low-lying eco-system – a wetland complex that supports a wide variety of creatures and plant life. This environment also happens to be ideal for supporting many mosquito breeding sites, several of which throughout the spring and summer. The focus of the Pottageville program is only to reduce the nuisance biting activity of the Spring Aedes mosquitos that are in abundance during the spring months.

Between April 1 and May 31, G.D.G. Canada Inc. will be applying a non-toxic, biological larvicide by air and ground to stagnant water to control larval mosquitoes that impact the residents of Pottageville. The applications are weather dependent and are likely to occur close to April 7.

The sites to be treated lie within the area bounded to the north by Highway 9, to the east by Highway 400, to the south by 18th Sideroad and to the west by 8th Concession.

The program will use multiple applications of granular and liquid biological larvicides. The granular will be applied by helicopter or drone and the liquid by truck-mounted and backpack sprayers. The treatment area map and details of the program can be accessed on the program’s webpage.
