EMPLOYER SPOTLIGHT

IRL Construction:
"We look for individuals who have a passion for construction, safety, learning, and progressing their career"

In November 2011, William Donnellan opened IRL Construction located in the heart of Olympic Village. Having been a Carpenter for many years in his native Ireland, Donnellan stayed true to his trade and decided to start a small business in his new home of Vancouver – a business that has grown into an acclaimed company within the city’s dynamic construction industry. “I truly believe that I haven't worked a full day for years. I believe this as I enjoy what I do so much,” said Donnellan. “It cannot be classified as work.”

IRL Construction has three main divisions to meet clients’ needs: Skilled Labour, Special Projects, and the Safety division. “We have over 60 in-house individuals specialized as Carpenters, Carpenter Helpers, Apprentices and Skilled Labourers,” said Aaron Lacey, Human Resources and Workforce Specialist of IRL Construction. “They are all certified and experienced to oversee a project from the beginning to end.”

Under the Special Projects division, the company specializes in Concrete Formwork and Framing, including the installation of walls, roofs, floors, doors, windows and hardware for commercial, residential and industrial buildings. Meanwhile, the Safety Division is managed by qualified Construction Safety Officers (CSOs) and provides in-house, on-site training with certification in accordance with provincial regulations.

As the construction industry continues to thrive despite the pandemic, IRL Construction is looking to expand their team. The company is hiring Skilled Labourers, as well as Carpenters with 5 or more years of experience. New hires complete an in-house training program and are eligible for a comprehensive benefits plan after 3 months. “We look for individuals who have a passion for construction, safety, learning and progressing their career,” said Lacey. “Our team works hard, but we also like to ‘let our hair down’ so we look for people who also know how to have fun.”

Interested in a career in construction? Click here to visit the IRL Group website.

To learn more about and apply for either the Skilled Labourer or Carpenter position, please send your resume to KGeronimo@vmesc.ca.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

Abdullah's story:
"I am working a full-time job as an Engineer in Training"

I was on Parental Leave. When I decided to go back to work, I was told that the company I was working for was closed. I become unemployed for a month. I heard from friends with similar situations about their experience with WorkBC and how it helped them find opportunities. I also saw an advertisement about WorkBC, so I decided to try it.

The challenges I faced included not having much Canadian experience. I did not know how to present myself in my resume or in an interview. I also did not know what titles I should look for that suit my previous experience, as well as what companies I should target in my job hunt.

When I came to WorkBC, I was shocked with the support and information I got from my Case Manager. He knew about the registration process with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) and encouraged me to proceed with my technical exams. He explained to me how much potential and opportunities I will get if I become certified engineer. I also received lots of advice on how to build my resume and cover letter. My Case Manager also advised me on the proper titles I should target in my job hunt.

I finished my technical exams and have become an Engineer in Training (EIT). Now, I am working a full-time job as an Engineer in Training, the same job that WorkBC helped me to find.
