COVID-19 Vaccine News & Updates

Trenton COVID-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) Temporary Closure

The CAC located at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens, in Trenton, will be temporarily closed for September 27, 28 & 29 due to the set up of a new space. The CAC will reopen on September 30, 2021 with new hours for COVID-19 testing of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Optional Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) Referrals to The Special Immunization Clinics Network

The Special Immunization Clinics (SIC) Network is offered by the Canadian Immunization Research Network (CIRN) to aid in the clinical management of patients following an AEFI or with a contraindication to vaccination. Physicians can refer patients who have experienced an AEFI to a COVID-19 vaccine or any other vaccination to a local Special Immunization Clinic.

National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) Recommends a Complete Series of a COVID-19 Vaccine for People Previously Infected with the COVID-19 SARS CoV-2 Virus

The NACI recommendation released on July 22, 2021, is based on the current scientific evidence and provides the following guidance:

  • Individuals should wait until they are no longer experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and have been cleared by Public Health from their isolation period as no longer infectious to others before receiving their vaccine.
  • Other factors to consider when deciding to vaccinate, include the level of COVID-19 transmission in the community, the circulation of variants, the individual’s exposure risk and the severity of their previous infection.

Expanded Eligibility for Third Doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine

Ontario has expanded third dose availability to additional highest risk groups as an extra layer of protection against the Delta variant. The following additional groups are now eligible for a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine at least eight weeks following their second dose:

  • Those undergoing active treatment for solid tumors;
  • Those who are in receipt of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T-cell;
  • Those with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome);
  • Stage 3 or advanced untreated HIV infection and those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; and
  • Those undergoing active treatment with the following categories of immunosuppressive therapies: anti-B cell therapies (monoclonal antibodies targeting CD19, CD20 and CD22), high-dose systemic corticosteroids, alkylating agents, antimetabolites, or tumor-necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors and other biologic agents that are significantly immunosuppressive.

How to Refer Patients for 3rd Dose:

A COVID-19 Vaccine 3rd Dose Patient Referral Form can be completed ONLY when vaccination administration is unable to be completed intra-organizationally by a Physician or Specialty Program responsible for eligible patient care. To refer an eligible candidate for a 3rd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, this form must be completed in full, signed, and shared with the patient who may present the form at an HPEPH clinic or participating pharmacy.

Ontario Released Guidance to Support Businesses in the Proof of Vaccination Policy

As of September 22, 2021, specified businesses and organizations are now required to request proof of identification and proof of full vaccination from each patron at the point of entry. The Reopening Ontario Act (A Flexible Response to COVID-19), 2020 was updated to enact this requirement and a guidance document was released to provide additional policy details.

Proof of Vaccination Posters have also been released for business to post at their entrance.

Definition of COVID-19 Fully Vaccinated Status Updated

As per the Ministry of Health guidance, in Ontario, an individual is now considered to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 if they have received:

  • The full series of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by Health Canada, or any combination of such vaccines,
  • One or two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine not authorized by Health Canada, followed by one dose of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine authorized by Health Canada, or
  • Three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine not authorized by Health Canada; and
  • They received their final dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days ago.

A document titled, COVID-19 Guidance for Individuals Vaccinated Outside of Ontario/Canada was also released to provide clarity on available COVID-19 vaccines.

Health Canada Approves New Names for COVID-19 Vaccines

Although there are no changes to vaccine formulations, Health Canada has approved the use of new brand names for the three COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in Canada. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will now be named Comirnaty, the Moderna vaccine will be known as SpikeVax, and the AstraZeneca vaccine will be referred to as Vaxzevria.
