New podcast episode: Considering self-employment? Find out what resources are available

Many people dream about being their own boss, opening up their own business and being self-employed. A recent survey actually found that 30% of “traditionally employed” Canadians expect to transition to self-employment in the next two years. But where do you start?

In this episode, we chat with Lynne Brisdon (Manager, Self-Employment Program at YMCA of Greater Vancouver), Mike Plumb (Owner at Dusk N Dawn Adventure Co. and WorkBC Centre alumni) and Andrea Welling (Regional Director BC at Futurpreneur Canada) about self-employment and entrepreneurship in Vancouver, and where you can go for help to get your business off the ground.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

Kelly's Story: "One week after passing my Board Exam, I was able to secure a full-time positon"

I was employed in the Hospitality industry and worked for the Marriott Hotel. Due to the pandemic, I was laid off and was not able to find employment for months. I was not able to find employment in any other industry since I did not have any experience outside of the Hospitality industry. I decided to seek help from WorkBC to possibly explore a new career direction and training.

I was very fortunate to have Elisha Osborne as my case worker. She helped and advised me on what professions are in demand to allow me to seek future career growth. She was very patient and guided me to find the right educational institute. She was very helpful and sympathetic to my situalton, which really helped with my mental health because I was feeling very stressed at not being able to find employment.

At this point in time, I had used up all my savings on rent and food and only had $5 remaining in my bank account. Elisha was able to help me with financial support for day-to-day living from WorkBC so that I can attend school while not being employed.

Recently, I graduated from Discovery Community College's Dental Assistant Level 2 program with a 94% average. I passed my board exam and am now a Certified Dental Assistant. One week after passing my Board Exam, I was able to secure a full-time positon. I am forever thankful for all the help and support provided to me by Elisha and WorkBC.
