How Town recreation facilities are operating under lastest Provincial guidelines

While recreational and cultural facilities remain closed to the general public, the Town is excited to offer prearranged bookable opportunities in our arenas, pools and gymnasium, in alignment with provincial health measures to ease public health restrictions.

Bylaw relaxed to allow front yard fire pits

The Okotoks Fire Department recognizes the community’s need for some much needed outdoor recreation and is relaxing enforcement of front yard fire pits to support this. During current winter conditions, and with diligence and proper management, front yard fire pits do not pose a significant risk and support the important needs of our community.

Put yourself b4 selfies!

When a driver is distracted, focus is taken off the road and the consequences to traffic safety can be serious. Research shows that distracted driving plays a role in 20 to 30 per cent of all collisions. Alberta’s Distracted Driving Law restricts the use of handheld electronic devices, reading printed materials in the vehicle, writing, printing, or sketching and personal grooming. The penalty for distracted driving in Alberta is a $300 fine and three demerit points.

Watch for icy areas on pathways and sidewalks

With wintery weather returning, the Town will be clearing and sanding pathways as resources permit. Freeze/thaw conditions may mean icy areas and standing water on pathways and sidewalks. Please use caution and consider using traction cleats, hiking poles or walking sticks.

Stay safe, keep off the ice

The Town would like to remind residents that storm ponds are not for recreational use. There is danger of falling through the ice on storm retention ponds and the Sheep River due to changing water levels. It is dangerous to walk, play or skate on any open bodies of water.
Instead, there are many other safe, fun winter activities available in Okotoks like skating at our outdoor rinks, snowshoeing and cross-county skiing!
