THE RANKIN REPORT

Beechville awarded Community Spirit Award

Dear Timberlea-Prospect Residents,

I hope you are having a great summer and enjoying the more relaxed pace of life that usually comes with sunny summer days.

I have always been inspired by the people who reside within our community, and it is that energy and spirit that motivates me to work on improving infrastructure and services through provincial resources. I am delighted the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia agrees and recognizes the outstanding spirit and quality of people that live here as well.

The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia created a Community Spirit Award to recognize the strength and diversity of our vibrant communities and the people that live here. Communities are selected for their unique strengths, level of citizen participation in community projects, level of diversity, and the level of community pride.

In the fall of 2018, Shirley Jollimore, a valued member of the riding, nominated Prospect, highlighting the connectiveness of the Prospect communities and the pride people share of their home, neighbours, local businesses, and a stunning coastal shoreline.

This summer, it is an honour for me to join His Honour Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia to present the Community Spirit Award to Beechville. The Beechville community has a long history, valued traditions, strong cultural heritage, and residents who work together to resolve community challenges, support recreational and cultural activities, involve youth and care compassionately for seniors.

Congratulations to the Beechville Community for receiving the prestigious Lieutenant Governor's Community Spirit Award, a testament of the collective character, quality, and excellence of the people of Beechville. It is truly a privilege to represent such outstanding people and communities, and I value the opportunity to serve all of you.

As the summer winds down, my colleagues and I are preparing for our return to the Nova Scotia Legislature on September 5th. Our caucus will be working on legislation to make life more affordable and will focus on legislation to help the housing crisis, healthcare, and to cutting the HST by two percentage points.

Keshen Goodman Library Re-Opened

I was pleased to attend the re-opening of the nearby Keshen Goodman Library after a modernized multi-million-dollar renovation.

I was fortunate to get a tour during the construction from Megan Gainer, Director of Facilities Halifax Public Libraries, along with some of my HRM and MLA colleagues to see the unique design features including improvements to the building’s energy efficiency and Hansen certificated accessibility. Looking forward to bringing the kids to the new children’s area!

A collaboration between Pier 21, Dr Afua Cooper, and the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia. This national exhibition is the first of its kind and provides a unique opportunity to learn more about our shared history, in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada. WHAT'S HAPPENING

Community Spotlight

Steadfast Community Volunteers

The MacDonald Memorial Legion (Branch 156) is a cornerstone of our community and plays a significant role every year by offering a gathering place to celebrate Canada Day, bring the community together and share a pancake breakfast.

This event has been so successful because of the volunteers that show up year-after-year to prepare and serve breakfast.

In appreciation of their steadfast commitment, I was pleased to award the King Charles limited edition commemorative pins to the volunteers who are always there to serve their community.

Recipients include (but not all pictured) ; Cathy McCulloch, Joclyn Field, Pam Blaikie, Joanne Richardson, David Smith, Dave Corbin, Donnie Gabriel, Christine Gabriel, Keith Johnson, Mary Marriott, Larry Marriott, Hailey Corbin, Ian Angus, Larry MacDonald, and Claude Fraser.

YOUR MLA

In the Community

Bill Estabrooks Memorial

Remembering my predecessor and mentor, Bill Estabrooks, former MLA of Timberlea-Prospect. Our community owes a debt of gratitude for his work and many contributions and I will always for grateful for Bill’s gracious time and guidance he gave to me as a new young MLA.

Thanking Benoit Electric

Big thanks to local company (and neighbour) Benoit Electric for helping the community in Glengarry unravel and get a fresh new flag up, donated from MP Lena Diab’s office. It looks great! This is one of the many reasons why we live in the best community. The good folks on Kingsmere Crt surely appreciate it.

Acadian Heritage Month

August has been designated as Nova Scotia’s Acadian Heritage Month, honouring more than four centuries of Acadian history, culture, language and traditions.
I enjoyed attended the flag raising and reading of the proclamation this month. Congratulations to all my friends with Acadian heritage. Vive l’acadie!
