A talk with Dr. Marius Kothor – West African Women Merchants and the Economics of Decolonization

You are invited to attend the Department of History and Sociology's Speaker Series featuring Dr. Marius Kothor from The University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Kothor’s talk, "West African Women Merchants and the Economics of Decolonization," will focus on how a wealthy group of Togolese women textile traders, known collectively as the Nana Benz, used the wealth and influence they gained from selling batik textiles to shape the political landscape of twentieth-century West Africa.

Join us on January 11 from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Downtown Library to listen to Dr. Kothor's talk.

Save the date: The Life Raft Debate

Don’t miss one of UBCO’s most engaging, most dramatic, and most iconic events: the Life Raft Debate. Mark your calendars for January 25, and watch as professors from different faculties debate against each other to prove that their discipline is superior to all others.

This year, debaters will imagine that a vampiric curse has plagued society. Which debater will used as bait to save humanity?

The Life Raft Debate is free to watch, but registering gives you a chance to win one of the door prizes (a UBC hoodie or UBC Bookstore gift card).

Host your own event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

The Sexual Violence Prevention & Response Office (SVPRO) is providing up to $250 to support initiatives during SAAM. You can create and host your own event and we will fund it!

For more than 10 years at UBC, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, rooted in consent culture and student activism, has raised awareness and encouraged people to take action to prevent sexualized violence. This year’s theme is "Sex Ed Saves Lives".

In addition to events put on by SVPRO over the years, we have been joined by collaborators including student clubs and associations, staff units, academic departments, and community partners. SVPRO would like to invite you to participate in SAAM 2024.
