More important dates and deadlines | Celebrate the start of school with Winter O Welcome! New to UBCO? Winter O Welcome is a great way to get to know the people, places, activities, and resources available at UBCO. Meet fellow new students at the Welcome Dinner, join in on a craft night, or learn more at an international student info session. Not a new student? That’s okay! Returning students are welcome to join in on some of the fun as well. This year’s programming includes snow tubing at Big White, skating, and more! Events run from January 8 to 27. Check out the schedule and register for the events that interest you. Sign up now | Cheer on the Heat as our teams begin the playoffs push! The Heat volleyball teams return to action as they begin their push for the playoffs this weekend! It's a showdown of sister schools as we take on the UBC Thunderbirds. Join us this Friday, January 5, in the gymnasium as the women take to the court at 5 pm followed by the men's game at 7 pm. The doubleheader wraps up on Saturday, January 6 with the women battling UBC at 4 pm followed by the men's game at 6 pm. UBCO Heat volleyball will then host the Calgary Dinos on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13 in their second last home weekend of the season. Cross this off your uni bucket list and attend a Heat game before the season wraps up! Come and bring the noise to the gymnasium to support the Heat 🔥 See the schedule | A talk with Dr. Marius Kothor – West African Women Merchants and the Economics of Decolonization You are invited to attend the Department of History and Sociology's Speaker Series featuring Dr. Marius Kothor from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Kothor’s talk, "West African Women Merchants and the Economics of Decolonization," will focus on how a wealthy group of Togolese women textile traders, known collectively as the Nana Benz, used the wealth and influence they gained from selling batik textiles to shape the political landscape of twentieth-century West Africa. Register now | Save the date: The Life Raft Debate Don’t miss one of UBCO’s most engaging, most dramatic, and most iconic events: the Life Raft Debate. Mark your calendars for January 25, and watch as professors from different faculties debate against each other to prove that their discipline is superior to all others. This year, debaters will imagine that a vampiric curse has plagued society. Which debater will used as bait to save humanity? The Life Raft Debate is free to watch, but registering gives you a chance to win one of the door prizes (a UBC hoodie or UBC Bookstore gift card). Start exploring your experience abroad | Host your own event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) The Sexual Violence Prevention & Response Office (SVPRO) is providing up to $250 to support initiatives during SAAM. You can create and host your own event and we will fund it! For more than 10 years at UBC, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, rooted in consent culture and student activism, has raised awareness and encouraged people to take action to prevent sexualized violence. This year’s theme is "Sex Ed Saves Lives". In addition to events put on by SVPRO over the years, we have been joined by collaborators including student clubs and associations, staff units, academic departments, and community partners. SVPRO would like to invite you to participate in SAAM 2024. Learn more | Yoga for mental wellness Unwind, de-stress and take a moment for your mental wellness in a one-hour yoga class, open to all students. No pre-registration is required, just arrive a few minutes early to set up your mat. Classes will run every Wednesday from 3:10 to 4:10 pm in Nechako 221 Gathering Room until April 10 (no class during Reading Week).
