| June Guest speaker Lorna Moffat We are pleased to Host Lorna Moffat, textile designer and fabric artist at our June meeting. Her inspiration The colors and climate of British Columbia have inspired Lorna to replace the luscious silks she used in the 90’s with warm, wool melton, cotton and linens. The people and cultures she encountered on her travels in Turkey, Borneo and South Africa, have inspired her whimsical colorful stitched portraits. Also, inspired by the beauty of nature, you will find queen bees, leaves and an explosion of florals in her collection. Visit Lorna online for more info. | We’re having a mini mod quilt swap at our July meeting! Everyone is welcome to participate, here's how: What to do - Make a mini modern quilt, the design and binding is up to you
- Use VMQG fabric colours—Kona Aloe, Wasabi, Kumquat, Nightfall and Snow (or colours that match closely; no pattern fabric)
- Minimum size 4 x 4 inches to a maximum of 10 x 10 inches
- Include a label on the back: VMQG Mini Mod Quilt Swap, July 2024, made by (your name).
- Submit this form
How it works Your name will go into the swap group list, make your mini mod quilt and bring it to the July meeting to be swapped. If you can’t attend in person, you could have someone bring your quilt to the swap on your behalf, or reach out to the executive and we can help coordinate. We will randomly swap the mini quilts ensuring that every participant receives a mini quilt made by another member. If you have any questions or need help filling out the form, email Dianne communication@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca | VMQG fabric bundles for sale Back by popular demand! We’re selling bundles of fabric in our guild colours, Kona Aloe, Wasabi, Kumquat, Nightfall and Snow. Just in time for our Mini Mod Quilt Swap 😉 Bundles are available in two sizes, each contain our five guild colours, all fabric is 100% cotton: - Fat Quarter bundles of fabric $20
- Half yard bundles of fabric $40
For your convenience, bundles will be for sale—at cost—at our guild meetings starting in June. Payment can be made by e-transfer or cash. If you have any questions, please email Hillary president@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca | Low Volume Fat Quarter Swap Here’s your chance to bulk up your stash of modern low volume fabric, and all you have to do is swap a couple fat quarters. How it works - Cut two low volume fat quarters from your stash (each 18 x 21 inches of the same pattern). You could purchase low volume fabric to swap if you don’t have any, but ideally this activity enables people to swap fabric without having to buy fabric #winwin
- Put your two FQs into one ziplock bag and print your name on the bag
- You can bring up to four bags of two FQs, that’s 8 FQs, 2 per bag
- At the June meeting, anyone who brings a FQ bag, will receive a different bag of low volume fabric in return #fabricfun
Note: - Fat quarters can be either US or Canadian, either size is fine. If you bring Canadian size FQs, be aware that you might receive US size FQs back
- When you arrive at the June meeting, there will be a table set up to drop your bag(s) off. Amy and Holly will swap the fat quarters between the bags, and after the meeting, you pick up your bag(s), with two new FQs per bag!
- Your fabric needs to be modern low volume prints. Please bring fabric of a quality that you would like to receive. If your fabric doesn’t fit the guidelines, we reserve the right to not swap your fabric, we have to be fair to our members who meet the guidelines.
What's a low volume fabric? Low volume fabrics are often described using words or phrases like muted, low contrast, low key, and quiet. The term low volume typically refers to cream or white fabrics with a subtle tone-on-tone pattern in light colours. The pattern design reads as neutral and can be used as a subtle texture in a block or as a background fabric. Dots, grids, small illustrations and text prints are all examples low volume patterned fabric, as shown in theses examples. After polling people at the end, many people agreed that the location (Stillwood Lodge) was not the best fit. Please provide your input to help find an alternative location for next year’s retreat. Take me to the survey If you have any questions, please email Hillary president@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca | Sew Good Quilts | update Thanks again to all who are helping to make Sew Good Quilts. Please read the lovely note that we received. Hi Megan. I would like to thank you and your group for the two beautiful quilts. I was saving them for just the right family. They’re Afghan, living in Turkey and will be rejoining the eldest daughter and her husband. The family consists of a widowed mother and her six children ranging in age from seven to 20 years old. One of the children has Downs. The father was killed by the Taliban. Their oldest daughter came yesterday to pick up some household goods and she was delighted with the quilts. We also had a single bed for them. Thanks for all your generous and beautiful donations. Regards, Julia If you’ve completed your quilt or top, please bring it to the meeting on June 17. If you’re still working on your quilt, please email Megan at sewgoodquilts@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca and let her know how it’s going. There will be two sets of top/back/binding/label available at the meeting for someone to take and complete. Please reach out to Megan if you can help. sewgoodquilts@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca | July Block Lotto—Maple Leaf Block What’s more perfect for the upcoming Canada Day but to sew a Maple Leaf block or two.
