CDP'S 2024 Cities A List

The City of Nanaimo has been named to CDP’s 2024 Cities A List, recognizing global leadership in environmental transparency, climate action and resilience planning. Only 112 cities worldwide earned CDP’s top score, including just eight in Canada.

This is the second time Nanaimo has made the list having also been on it in 2022. Earning a spot on CDP’s A List is a significant achievement that reflects the highest standard of local climate leadership.

Commercial Street Project

Downtown Nanaimo is proudly featuring new colours, just in time for the Pride Parade! Crews are putting the finishing touches to the Bastion and Commercial street intersection, while a recently painted duplicate of the Pride heart featured in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, was installed on Skinner Street. The colours are taken from the inclusion flag seen across the country during Pride Month.

The City is committed to fostering a community where everyone feels welcome, included and supported. This is a reminder to the many individuals that continue to experience hate and violence that they are supported, each and every day.

GoByBike Week

Thank you to everyone who embraced active transportation and joined us for a fun, energizing week of cycling across the city during GoByBike Week. From seasoned riders to new cyclists, your enthusiasm helped make this year’s spring event a success. It was incredible to see so many people swapping car keys for handlebars and discovering the joy of getting around by bike.

Our celebration stations were buzzing all week long with great energy, free goodies, and fun activities. A big shoutout to the volunteers, organizers and local sponsors who helped bring everything together. Whether you rode to work, school, or just for the joy of it, your participation supports a healthier, more sustainable Nanaimo.

We hope the week inspired you to keep pedaling throughout the summer — whether for fun, fitness or your daily commute. Every ride counts!

Splash into Summer!

As we head into another week of warm weather, take the opportunity to visit one of our four water parks in Nanaimo, located at Deverill Square Park, Departure Bay Kiwanis Park, Harewood Centennial Park and Mansfield Park.

Water parks are open 9 am to 8 pm, seven days a week.

Protect Wildflowers

Camas flowers, along with other local wildflowers, are significant to the local ecology, turning meadows into a beautiful rainbow of colours in the spring. Did you know? Their bulbs were traditionally harvested by the Coast Salish people as a source of carbohydrates and are often found growing under the branches of Garry Oak trees.

Please remember to stay on the path while visiting our many parks such as Pipers Lagoon, Bowen, Camas and Neck Point Park - especially during wildflower season.

WILDFLOWERS IN NANAIMO

Fairy Zone

Visitors to Neck Point Park may notice a shadier landscape thanks to recent restoration efforts. Over 45 new trees and 300 plants have been added near the parking lot and washroom building. This new vegetation is part of an ongoing initiative to restore the forest understory which has been impacted by off-trail foot traffic. The first phase of this project was completed through a collaboration between students from École Hammond Bay, volunteers from the Nanaimo Area Land Trust and City parks staff.

Nestled among the newly planted areas is a whimsical addition—a Fairy “Welcome Tree” that replaces the beloved “Giving Tree” lost in a windstorm last year. Several fairy and gnome homes have also been refreshed with new walking paths made from windstorm debris and interpretive signage to guide visitors.
