Jack Moes, Dean of Trades and Technology, Mike Vallee, Plumbing instructor, and Tracey Brenton, International Projects and Partnership Development Officer, traveled to Kenya to visit Kenyan institutions as part of CICan's Young Africa Works - Kenya: Youth Employability through TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) program. Joined by members from partner colleges BCIT and Lakeland, they focused on developing programs in such areas as plumbing, farm equipment maintenance, and feed formulation. They found the teams at the Kenyan institutions to be highly competent and keen, as well as welcoming. The College will be hosting some of the Kenyan partners in the fall.

Hospitality Management instructor Anna-Marie Rautenbach isn't new to travel. Born in South Africa, she lived in three countries before settling in Canada more than a decade ago.

Recently her travels took her to the Maasai Mara region of Kenya to assist the Maasai Mara Technical and Vocational College in the development of a Tour Guide qualification.

By 2031, BC is expected to have over a million job openings, 80% of which will require some level of post-secondary education. Ascend is our quarterly look at this type of labour market data for BC and the Kootenay region, delivered right to your inbox!

Special Events

Commencement 2022

In front of more than 1,100 friends and family members, 250 graduates from the 2022, 2021, and 2020 classes walked across the stage at Western Financial Place to accept their credential.

Academic awards were presented by College Board of Governors Chair Randal Macnair and President Paul Vogt.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal is awarded to a student from a vocational or career program who has excelled in his or her studies and contributed in a positive way to the College or their community. This award was presented to Claire Wensveen, a graduate from the Educational Assistant program. Wensveen navigated multiple education systems with a learning disability herself and believes as an Education Assistant she can help build a more inclusive future for all.

Eilish Cox was presented with the Governor General’s Medal Collegiate Bronze, a Medal awarded to the student who has achieved the highest academic standing upon graduation from a two-year diploma or associate degree program. It is the greatest honour that can be bestowed upon a student at this level. Cox graduated from the Criminal and Social Justice diploma program and plans to attend Acadia University in Nova Scotia next fall, to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition.

The final award was the President’s Award of Excellence. Made possible through donations from staff, faculty, and management, this Award is presented to a first- or second-year student who has taken a full course load and has achieved the highest cumulative GPA. The recipient must be continuing at the College in a degree program or transferring to another institution to complete a degree. The recipient also receives a $2500 award from the College. This year’s recipient, Carson Thompson, graduated with an Engineering certificate and hopes one day to become a professional mechanical engineer. In the fall, he plans to transfer to the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus and complete a Bachelor of Applied Science.
